Iran-Qatar match to be re-located to neutral venue.

According to Mehr news reporter, while it was previously announced that the match between the Iran and Qatar will be held at the Imam Reza Stadium in Mashhad, the Asian Football Confederation ruled, in a letter sent to the FFIRI , that this match should be held in a neutral country.

Ahmad Dunyamali, the Minister of Sports and Youth, said this Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the cabinet meeting: “Given the conditions we had in the last week or two, the AFC decided that this game should be held in a third country.” He continued: “Our proposal was to play the upcoming match against Qatar as a guest instead of as a host, and of course, this matter was subject to the approval of the AFC and the Qatari side.”

The Minister of Sports and Youth emphasized: “There is also a discussion of holding the match in another country, and our first proposal was Uzbekistan, but on the same day of the Iran-Qatar match, Uzbekistan is also hosting the UAE, and it is possible that the Iran-Qatar match will be held in another country, such as the UAE.”

The geopolitical situation seems to dictate the affairs and fears of escalation of hostilities in the Middle East has presented a challenge for the AFC and the host nations.

FFIRI responds to FIFA about Mashad incidents.

By the end of FIFA’s six-day deadline, the Iranian Football Federation FFIRI presented its defense in the case of the Iran-Lebanon match held in Mashad.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee on September 5th in a letter to the Iranian Football Federation demanded an explanation for the disorderly events of the match between Iran and Lebanon which was held in Mashhad. This match was the last game Iran played in the qualification rounds of the FIFA World Cup 2022. As the spectators were entering the stadium, disturbances occurred outside Imam Reza stadium. The sole reason for the aggravations which were associated with some violent scenes were the security forces, who took it upon themselves to stop women from entering the stadium at the behest of some religious figures. There was no attempt by the FFIRI personnel to intervene. Some female spectators, most of whom held legitimate match tickets, were insulted and treated roughly by the security forces.

Social media was littered with such scenes.

FIFA had given Iran six days to respond to this case. According to Ehsan Usooli, today was the deadline for FFIRI, which felt the seriousness of the accusations and possible sanction by the world governing football body as a result. FFIRI sent its response on time and according to Mehdi Taj, the new head of FFIRI, the FIFA letter’s wording was somewhat worrying, and for this reason, we have officially corresponded with government officials from the presidency to the judiciary and the parliament asking the appropriate authorities to deal with the perpetrators of this incident in Mashad.

FFIRI has permitted the entry of females only after the government lifted the ban. The action of the security forces in Mashhad was not in line with the government and it was an individual act by the local commander that created those ugly scenes that harms Iran’s reputation.  The FFIRI letters to the government agencies have been attached to Iran’s response to prove to FIFA that the government and the federation of Football had no role in this disorder. Meanwhile, there is yet no official response from the government to FFIRI to indicate that any police or security personnel will be held accountable. Holding the government and especially security forces liable in Iran is a very rare occurrence and if it ever happens, it will definitely not be publicized.

FIFA has announced that this case will be heard on September 31. Some officials of the football federation, including the vice president of the football federation, have expressed concern about this case.

Although FFIRI was not the culprit in this case and has not acted in violation of the FIFA regulation, the fact that females, not only were stopped from entering but also treaded roughly by security forces, does not emblemish FFIRI. It does not form a good defense nor will it be considered a genuine justification as the violation has occurred in the country. With local government personnel or any individual local commanders acting as they please on this subject, it is difficult to predict if females will be allowed in the stadiums in various Iranian cities. FIFA also fears that freedom of access to stadiums by female fans will be selective rather than institutional and FFIRI will play its ignorance card.

FIFA is expected to act harshly against Iran, although scenes of ladies in Azadi where cheering female fans made the headlines across the world, might reduce the intensity of FIFA’s action.

FIFA demands answers from FFIRI on the events in Mashhad.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee sent a letter to the Iranian Football Federation, demanding explanations of the events of the match between Iran and Lebanon in Mashhad.

6 months after the events of the game, the final one in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers where Iran hosted Lebanon, the World governing body informed the FFFIRI in a letter two days that investigations are in progress addressing events of that match as a case is filed due to several code violations, giving the Iranian side six days to respond.

The letter, which has been signed by the head of the FIFA disciplinary committee, stated five cases of violations.  The FIFA Disciplinary Committee meeting will be held on September 22  and it should be seen what sort of sanctions ad or penalties will be handed to the Iranian Football Federation.

The Iran-Lebanon game was held in Mashhad on March 29, 2022, in which some ugly scenes were witnessed including using undue force by the security personnel against women spectators who held tickets for the match but were denied entry by force.

The official officials of the football federation apologized to the fans who were treated badly while declaring that the action of the security forces was beyond their control. It is highly unlikely that such an apology and excuse will be sufficient enough to escape punishment from FIFA which has the option to ban Iran from hosting official home games to heavy fines that can be the equivalent of all the income of the matches that Team Melli plays in the FIFA World Cup.

The forceful banning of women’s entry into the stadium was ordered by the local clergy in the holly city of Mashhad with the blessing of the government. It is highly unlikely for Mashhad to host any international game in the near future.

Team Melli ends the qualification rounds with a win against Lebanon.

Mashad: Iran completed their AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road to Qatar™ schedule in style, eliminating Lebanon from playoff contention with a 2-0 victory at the Imam Reza Stadium on Tuesday.
Goals from Sardar Azmoun and Alireza Jahanbakhsh continued Team Melli’s superb form on home soil and ensured they will go into Friday’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ draw full of confidence after an outstanding campaign.

Lebanon came into the Matchday 10 clash with the door to June’s AFC qualification playoff ever so slightly ajar, but a sixth Group A defeat meant Mashhad marked the end of the road for Ivan Hašek’s side.

While the Cedars came into the tie without the likes of Soony Saad and Hassan Maatouk, Iran welcomed back Jahanbakhsh, who missed Thursday’s 2-0 defeat to Korea Republic, and it was the Feyenoord star who forced a solid save from Mostafa Matar with the game’s first real chance, a well struck 20-yard effort in the 19th minute.
Dragan Skočić’s men monopolised early possession, while Lebanon looked to minimise clear cut chances for their opponents, but the visiting side’s resistance was broken by a goal of beautiful simplicity, with Hossein Kanani dissecting the defence to find Azmoun’s perfectly timed run, with the Bayer Leverkusen forward easing the ball home from 12 yards in the 35th minute.
Iran looked to be cruising at that stage, but the hosts were almost punished for some untidy moments in possession prior to the interval, with Hussein Zein sending a rare Lebanese effort on goal narrowly over Alireza Beiranvand’s crossbar in the final minute of the first half.
The hosts continued to live dangerously after the break, with Hilal El Helwe sending Beiranvand sprawling with a volleyed effort that went only inches wide in the 48th minute, but Lebanon’s slim hopes were finally dashed when the Iranian captain put the result beyond doubt with just under 20 minutes remaining.
Again, it was a Kanani pass that unlocked the Lebanese defence, with his lofted ball catching out a much higher defensive line before Jahanbakhsh (pictured below, centre) beat Matar with a cultured side-footed effort which sent the bouncing ball floating into the net from 15 yards.
In Dubai, the UAE team fought gallantly to defeat South Korea 1-0 to seal its position in the AFC playoff and also

confirm Iran as the group winners.

With their third successive FIFA World Cup appearance long secured, Iran’s latest win means they overtake  Korea Republic in group A.

Iran- Lebanon : Match preview

Mashhad: Lebanon will look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, while Iran’s focus rests on clinching top spot in Group A when the two sides meet in their final AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road to Qatar™ Group A fixture on Tuesday.
A 3-0 home loss to already-eliminated Syria last time out did severe damage to Lebanon’s hopes of reaching their first ever global Finals via June’s playoffs but results elsewhere mean Ivan Hašek’s retain a glimmer of hope going into Matchday 10.

Three points behind third-placed United Arab Emirates, and two short of fourth-placed Iraq, the Cedars can still claim the playoff spot for themselves should they defeat high-flying Iran, in addition to results in the group’s two other fixtures all their way.

Even the first element of that scenario is no easy task.

Team Melli hasn’t lost a FIFA World Cup Qualifier on home soil since November 2012 and has been similarly difficult to beat there in this campaign, with Son Heung-min the only player in Group A to find the back of the net for a visiting team in Iran.

Dragan Skočić’s side – who qualified for Qatar 2022 weeks ago – will welcome back Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who missed Thursday’s 2-0 defeat to the Korea Republic due to COVID-19, while Sardar Azmoun is expected to lead the line in the absence of Mehdi Taremi, who also returned a positive test prior to the match in Seoul.

But while the Iranian squad is filled with European-based stars, Lebanon’s biggest task may well be to overcome the disappointment of Thursday’s defeat.

With a playoff place on offer, the Cedars failed to perform in Saida, slumping to a disastrous 3-0 defeat to a side that had taken just two points from their previous eight matches in Group A.

That result came as a devastating blow, but Iraq’s win over the United Arab Emirates a few hours later meant that Lebanon’s campaign retains a sense, however slight, of final day optimism.

Hašek and his players may well take confidence from their earlier meeting with Iran, played last November, when a Soony Sadd goal had Lebanon 1-0 ahead going into second-half stoppage time, only for late goals from Azmoun and Ahmad Nourollahi to dramatically snatch all three points for the visitors.

The Lebanese outfit also seems to thrive away from home. While their five home games have produced only a solitary point, they have taken five from four matches on the road, with their only away defeat coming against group leaders the Korea Republic.

They have never beaten Team Melli in Iran, but they did famously claim a 1-0 win in a World Cup Qualifier in Beirut back in 2012.

If the Lebanese class of 2022 can shrug off the disappointment of last week’s defeat and produce a shock of their own, all eyes will turn to Dubai, where the results of both the United Arab Emirates and Iraq will reveal the final twist in what has been a dramatic Asian Qualifiers tale.

Match against Lebanon might be held away from Azadi.

Mojtaba Khorshidi, the Manager of Team Melli said “the last game of our national team against Lebanon might be held in a city other than Tehran”:

“According to the president of the federation in regards to the development of football in the provinces, there is an inclination for the last game of the group against Lebanon to be played in one of the following cities; Mashad, Isfahan, Tabriz or Ahvaz. provided they get the approval from FIFA and are up to the standards required” Khorshidi added.

” I think it could be a good and pleasant event for Iranian football. The national football team is doing its best to win both games and maintain its lead. We do need our fans elsewhere to witness the success of the team also”

Iran U19 continues its victory trail defeating Jordan 3-0

Mashad: Iran took a step closer to the 2016 AFC U-19 Championship with a 3-0 defeat of Jordan that saw the Group E hosts open up a two-point lead at the top of the table  over Kuwait, who came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Nepal in Sunday’s earlier qualifier.

After a demoralising 10-0 humbling at the hands of hosts Iran, Nepal gave a better account of themselves in their second Group E fixture and took the lead a minute after the hour mark through skipper Bimal Gharti Magar only for Khaled Al Enezi to rescue a point for the Kuwaitis with the equaliser ten minutes later.

Kuwait’s draw allowed Iran to go two points clear at the top of the Group E standings after the hosts handed Jordan their second successive defeat as Amirhossein Peirivani’s side enjoyed a 3-0 victory as the qualifying campaign reached its penultimate round of fixtures.

Jordan, who lost 2-1 to Kuwait in Monday’s Group E opener, and Iran looked to be heading into the interval at the Samen Al Aemeh Stadium with the game locked at 0-0 until Nima Daghestani struck on the stroke of half-time to give the home side the lead.

Reza Shekari took his personal tally to three in two games when he followed up his two goals against Nepal with Iran’s second in Sunday’s crucial clash with the Jordanians before Nima Mokhtari repeated Shekari’s achievement when he scored his third of the campaign in the 63rd minute as Iran ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.

Ten group winners and five best second-placed teams will qualify for the finals while hosts Bahrain received an automatic qualification (total 16 teams).

If Bahrain finish top of their qualifying group or one of the five second best-placed teams, the next (6th) second-placed team will qualify for the final competition.
