Nekounam pours his wrath on FFIRI.

Javad Nekounam was interviewed by telephone on Navad Program Monday night. The poor communication line, spoiled what was supposed to be constructive exchange between himself ,  the incumbent head of FFIRI, Ali Kaffashian and the show anchor Adel Ferdowsipour.

Kaffashian was the studio guest of Navad.

Javad Nekounam stopped short of accusing Ali Kaffashian of negligence when he talked extensively about the lack of  proper support for Team Melli during its quest to qualify for the world cup. “I am not singling out Mr. Kaffashian who has tried to help the team, but at best his efforts were way short of what has to be done for the most important team in Iran that is trying to qualify for the World’s biggest sporting event. Support for Team Melli is a collective effort which has not met our aspirations.”

“All what the Team Melli players have said about that were true (…)  no one has fabricated any lies .” Nekounam alleged.

“Lack of funds meant that we had to do with sub-standard kits that were actually made in Iran. I agree with Ashkan Dejagah on that. Iran’s football league standard is of a low quality of which 20% of that weakness is due the poor quality of the balls manufactured in Iran. The kit we were using was not of a good quality and everyone was dissatisfied with it.”

nekounam AFC Award 2013

Team Melli kit manufacturers UHLsports has strongly challenged what it calls allegation of substandard quality , although the German sports good company admitted that some fake UHLSports kits was found in Team Melli’s kit collections  when an audit was conducted.  Those fake ones were not sent or approved by UHLSports nor did it have any control over it.

Nekounam criticized the FFIRI again by accusing the federation of inattentiveness and disregard for Team Melli players. “After the win against Chile, we expected some rewards, but we did not even get a phone call to congratulate us let alone a bonus.!” The Osasuna Captain said.

Nekounam had no complimentary words for the Iran’s football. He accused un-named parties of building hurdles against Queiroz and working to ousted him. He also emphasized that he and the rest of the Team Melli players are quite satisfied with Queiroz and braved Kaffashian to keep him by using his own judgment rather than succumbing to external pressure.

Nekounam was evidently referring to the pressure by the Ministry of Youth and Sports but did not have the nerve to name them. Kaffashian admitted that he did not contact the Team Melli players but offered no apology or proper justification.

Nekounam admitted that his decision to quit Team Melli was abrupt and without much thought, however, he insisted that he has played his last game with the team.

NekounamJNekounamJ

Nekounam has some valid arguments, although none of it is new. However, like the plethora of critics, the record holder of matches in Team Melli is not offering practical solutions nor indicating that he is willing to work on some good deeds to help take Iran’s football out of this hardship, at least within his capabilities.

Nekounam also ignored a very important issue and that is the role of the Iranian players themselves in this chaotic status. Players who are paid professional wages but hey are amateurs in every sense of the word, and that includes Team Melli players.

While the country’s economy and many sectors of society was suffering under sanctions, many footballers were enjoying a luxury life with wages several folds higher than other professional such as surgeons , doctors , university lectures etc.

Indiscipline, apathy, lack of commitment, disrespect for peers and egotism are quite rife amongst the footballers. Areas that have not been seriously addressed by any football management schemes, although it is common knowledge.

Omid Nazari talks about Team Melli.

-source: http://svenskfotboll.se/

The Iranian national team plays its first international football match on Swedish soil. We enlisted the help of Malmö player Omid Nazari for a closer look at Tuesday’s opponents. The MFF-trained 23-year-old not only is following Iran’s national team – he has played himself into for the team. In 2012 it he played in five appearances and scored a goal for the Iranian side.

– I was selected to the squad in 2012. It was really cool to experience it and compete with the best in Iran. They recruited Carlos Queiroz. He ruled the entire national team and has certainly achieved good results, says Omid Nazari.

Q: What has Queiroz achieved with Iran to lift?

– He has the experience, training Portuguese national team, Real Madrid and has been assistant to Sir Alex at Manchester United. He knows how it will work for taking the extra strides and get the organization in the squad and everything around it.

Q: What is he like as a coach?

– He knows what he wants and how he wants to play. There are clear lines and all the players know what to do. He is a good coach.

It is largely the same Iranian game plan now as it was three years ago.

– I think they will play 4-3-3. They have a good midfield and a good offensive players. The team works hard and can adapt quickly. They have clever wingers who are aggressive and hard-working midfielder with good passing game. Offensive threats include Reza Ghoochannejhad, Ashkan Dejagah and Sardar Azmoun, who was very good in the Asian Cup in January, says Nazari:

Nazari-Omid-3 (2)

– Dejagah is one of the wingers and used to play for Fulham and Wolfsburg, but now plays in the Qatari league. Reza has played in Charlton Athletics and Standard Liege, but also plays in Qatar now. Sardar Azmoun is a young player who is in Rubin Kazan,  currently on loan to another club in the Russian premier league (Rostov).

– Captain is Osasuna’s Javad Nekounam. The 34-year-old midfielder has played nearly 150 international matches. He has a lot of experience from playing in Europe. He played in the Spanish league for a while before he returned back to Iran for a season then played in Kuwait, but now he’s back in Osasuna.

– Iran showed during the World Cup in Brazil that it is a team that absolutely should not be underestimated. The first match against Nigeria ended goalless and Argentina would have left the stadium in Belo Horizonte with 0-0 result , until a certain Lionel Messi struck with a wonder goal in time added on.  The defeat 1-3 against Bosnia-Herzegovina meant that qualifying to the eighth finals was missed.

– It will be a tight game. There is little difference between Asian and European football. Here, the football is more organized. I can not really point out where Iran is vulnerable or weak , they had good defense against Argentina for example, says Omid Nazari.

The midfielder from Malmo preparing to present a season with FC Rosengård in Division 2 Southern Götaland, where he makes a fresh start after he suffered a severe knee injury in autumn 2013 (when he played for Ängelholm FF in the Premier League).

– I hope to take a step back to top level  football, says Omid.

Team Melli prospects.

What have we learned from the 2 victories?

Team Melli has completed its initial task with full mark. Qualification to the quarter finals of the AFC Asian Cup, the 6th in a row since 1996, was achieved with the 1-0 win against Qatar in a match that will always be remembered for the wonder goal scored by young Sardar Azmoun.

With the place in quarter finals assured, Queiroz must be re-thinking some of his plans to prepare for the next round. His solid defenses are intact and the least of his worries despite the new look line up with Pouraliganji and Ghafoori replacing the old hands and doing a very admirable job so far. Haghighi at goal, despite one or two scares was not really tested in the two matches, however in the few occasions that he had to act; he was well positioned to protect his goal. Haghighi’s agility and prowess on aerial balls gives the defense so much confidence that it lacked in the last few years. So, with the back line as is, Queiroz needs to shift his focus elsewhere. The predicaments start after passing the back line.

Ando Teymourian

The midfield is still the most worrying of the 3 lines and found wanting time and again. It has no quality playmaker and more often than not, it lacked leadership. For Teymourian and Nekounam despite their gallant attempts to put up a decent performance, both are clearly lacking match fitness and suffering from a dip in forms.  On the flanks, much was expected from Dejagah on the right and Hajsafy on the left , but the Qatar match , showed their limitations when the opposition’s coach decides to deploy a tight man to man marking at them. Both performed well below expectations. Dejagah who was one of the stars of the match against Bahrain tormenting their left back, was a different man altogether with young Qatari Defender AbdulKarim leaving him helpless while breathing down his neck all the time. Hajsafy , seems to be still under the influence of his wonder goal against Bahrain and has not shown much industry on the left hand side. Shojae, remains the biggest liability for the team. His contribution is marginal. He is a player who is Short of breath, easily beaten on the ball, unable to dribble or run when it is really required and lacks stamina. Such act cannot be of the big matches standard and quality.

Ashkan Dejagah

With such a midfield, Sardar Azmoun was isolated up front and really lacked quality service to show his worth. On the one occasion that he was served well, ironically from Dejagah, the whole world saw what this young man is capable of. Smart, swift and clever striker who finished in style. Unfortunately, that was the only occasion he was provided well, then got himself injured.

What options is left for Queiroz? To start with, give Shojaei a much needed rest and introduce some fresh legs and quality player in the shape of Alireza Jahanbakhsh. We dared Queiroz to do it in the forward line and use Azamoun, and he did it successfully. Now, Jahanbakhsh is ready for his turn and rearing to go. In fact, he has more advantage over Azmoun in the form of more playing time in the Dutch league.  Khosrow Heydari is another option to replace Shojaei.

Apart from that, there is not too much riches available to Queiroz.

One thing that clearly disturbed the Portuguese coach of Team Melli in Qatar match and the TV cameras caught his frustration quite well, was the failure of the team to keep the possession of ball in the last part of the match. The Team Melli players kept losing the ball.  The haste at which the players were clearing the ball, the aimless passes with Ghoochannejad and Dejgah being the main culprits, and failure to play short passes resulted in Qatar taking advantage and the full control of the match in the dying minutes. This is a very risky situation with a one goal margin.

Queiroz was so frustrated and nervous that he had to introduce a fifth defender to kill the game in the final minutes and protect his slim lead. This is one shortcoming of Iranians that have marred their play for several generations now. Keep the ball and protect a tight result.

The final match against UAE would be yet another interesting test for Queiroz. In reality, it does not make any difference if they end up playing Japan, the defending champions or Iraq. Both are difficult opponents and at some stage, Iran has to beat these teams if they have any aspiration to lift the trophy after 40 years.

So far, none of the contenders has shown to be a class above the rest. Australia, South Korea, China, Japan and Iran are quite close and matches between them can go anywhere.

One advantage that Team Melli has, is the outstanding and the superb crowds that have been adding so much color, and life to this tournament. Team Melli fans might even outnumber the host if Iran makes it to the final match with Australia. Simply a great act by the Australian Iranians and a symphony in motion.

Javad Nekounam breaks the record of Team Melli all time appearnces

Finally , the current Captain of Team Melli, Javad Nekounam , broke Ali Daei’s record for the most number of matches while playing his 150th match against Qatar in Sydney.

Javad Nekounam , who started his international career in 2000 while a midfield player at Pas Tehran , has been consistently playing for Team Melli in the last 14 years in which he played in 2 World Cups (2006 , 2014) and 5 AFC Asian Cup ( 2000, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2015).

Nekounam is also the 4th highest scorer in Team Melli history , behind Ali Daei, Karim Bagheri and Ali Karimi , the 3 legendary stars of Iranian football. Nekounam has accumulated 37 goals , one less than Ali Karimi who is the third on the list.

Our sincere congratulation to Nekounam on this achievement.

Messi-Nekounam

Ali Daei’s message of support to Nekounam

The legendary Ali Daei , holder of Team Melli all time appearance records with 149 international games and also the World top international scorer of all time , sent Javad Nekounam a support and inspiration message.

In his message , Daei congratulated Nekounam on his approach to breaking Daei’s record of national games and encouraged him to pursue this feat and show the world how Iran can perform well even under duress.

“I am aware that the coach is not entirely happy about the pre-tournament preparation and the acute lack of friendly games. I am aware that the conditions for the players and the coaching staff were not ideal, however, I believe in the Iranian team spirit. I am more than hopeful that this team will seek glory and make the Iranian fans jubilant and proud by performing to their maximum potential.”

“My best wishes to you as the leader and I wish you and the rest of players , the coaching staff and all involved in the Asian Cup mission , the very best. Be assured that we will all be behind you. I shall maintain my stance and will always be a Team Melli fan under all circumstances.”

Ali Daei has 149 games and 109 goals (Teammelli.com credits Daei with 112 goals). Javad Nekounam has 148 games and 37 goals.  It is expected that Nekounam will equal Daei’s games next Sunday against Bahrain.

Ali Daei is invited by AFC and the Asian Cup Organizing Committee as an honorary guest for the Finals of the Asian Cup. It is not clear if Daei will be attending Team Melli matches in Australia in person.

5th consecutive Asian Cup for Nekounam and approaching record.

Team Melli Captain, Javad Nekounam is on the brink of breaking a record of total match played for Team Melli. The current record holder is Ali Daei with 149 match appearances, while the Osasuna Captain is lagging behind by 2 matches with 147.

The next competition that Nekounam can equal or overtake Daei record is the AFC Asian Cup 2015 in Australia. Barring any surprises or injuries, Nekounam is assured at least the 3 matches he requires to take the all time record of matches. This will also be a record breaking 5th consecutive AFC Asian Cup appearance for Nekounam who played in the 2000 edition of Asian cup in Lebanon.  Javad Nekounam ( 34 years) made his debut for Team Melli against Syria on the 28th May 2000 at the age of 20 when he was a Pas Tehran player. Jalal Talebi was Team Melli coach who gave Nekounam his debut. For the next 14 years, the midfielder ‘s name was ever present in the list of Team Melli , with a character and performances which made it easy for the various Team Melli coaches to pick him.

Unlike many of his contemporaries , Nekounam kept a steady form , high level of discipline and avoided side issues and problems off the field. Despite being on the same age group of Ali Karimi , and Mehdi Mahdavikia, both household names in Iran and well-known beyond the national border , Nekounam managed to easily overtake both in number of matches played for Team Melli. while the Karimi was busy involving himself in all types of disputes and trouble making that kept him away from Team Melli on several occasions , Nekounam simply pressed on. Mahdavikia , on the other hand, suffered from the fact that he played in Germany which restricted his number of games especially the friendly matches.

In the list of top players who played 50 matches or more, the only player that seem likely to overtake both Daei and Nekounam , is Sepahan’s Ehsan Hajsafy. The young player is going from strength to strength with some wonderful performances. His consistency and discipline is exemplary and that should allow him . like Nekounam , to be on the selection list of Team Melli for many years to come.

Ghoochannejad finally scores in a humiliating defeat.

Reza Ghoochannejad , finally score a goal for his club Al Kuwait  nonetheless in one quite humiliating defeat for his team.

Persipura Jayapura recorded a sensational 6-1 win over defending champions Kuwait Sports Club to become the first Indonesian club to reach the AFC Cup semi-finals. Al Kuwait FC , the defending champion won the first leg 3-2

Ghoochannejhad who played in both legs , had an effort ruled out for offside in the 57th minute but the Iranian would give his side a glimmer of hope when he headed in a cross by Al Enezi eight minutes later.

Two days after this heavy defeat, Al Kuwait FC sacked their coach. Abdulaziz Hamadah , who was a fervent supporter of Ghoochannejad and with the help of Javad Nekounam , helped secure Ghoochannjed service for Al Kuwait FC.

Reza Ghoochannjed has yet to score for his team in the league.

Nekounam back in Osasuna after 2 years absence.

Two years ago, Javad Nekounam left Osasuna to Esteghlal Tehran after he refused to accept a substantial pay cut mandated by the Chief Executive of the club. Osasuna , which was playing in the La Liga was struggling financially and Nekounam was one of their highest paid players. Getting rid of him seemed to be a logical financial move for the club , but far from a sound decision tactically.

Today , Javad Nekounam has returned back to his old favorite place , but the Pamplona club is no more a La liga club. Last season and after a very tough run , the club was relegated , and now it is in the second division.

The Bosses of Osasuna introduced Nekounam to about 500 cheering Osasuna fans in Pamplona. Javad immediately got to work and started his first training session preparing for the imminent start of the Segunda Liga of Spain.

Before his departure from Iran, after returning from World Cup duty, Javad Nekounam created a major controversy when he embarked on a verbal war and spoke highly critically about Amir Ghalenoei , his coach in Esteghlal with his alleged faults. Nekounam did not chew his words either accusing the coach , who was also the coach of Team Melli when Nekounam was a member of the team in Asian Cup 2007 , of being ignorant about football coaching.

For the record, Amir Ghalenoei is the highest decorated Iranian coach in league history winning 4 titles with Esteghlal and Sepahan. His record with Team Melli is also one of the best officially losing one friendly match only. Not a bad achievement for a coach who ignorant about football coaching according to Nekounam.

The accusations against Ghalenoei made public by Nekounam , promoted Esteghlal club and Ghalenoei himself to seek justice and file a slander case against the Captain of Team Melli in the courts.

Meanwhile, it seems that the talks between a Greek club and Masoud Shojaei has broken down. Shojaei is a free player since he was released by Las Palmas at the end of last season and still seeking a club in Europe. It very much looks like the East for Shojaei, either back home to Iran or one of the Persian Gulf countries’ leagues.

Al Kuwait ٍSC gets Reza Ghoochannejad.

While the one goal scored by Iran in the World Cup along with two defeats, did not impress any European clubs and we failed to see any real interest from even second tier Europeans,  it was believed that the scorer of the lone Iranian goal would find a better fortune than a lower tier league club in England and stand a good chance in getting a decent club playing top-level football.

Reza Ghoochanejad was not a happy man at Charlton Athletics, a club that struggled for survival and eventually scraped through and maintained it English Championship league status for the next season. Even in this frail team, Reza did not manage to find a fixed starting role. He was hardly used and only managed to score one goal. The writing was on the wall that Reza would seek out of this fortunes elsewhere, but very few predicted that he will fly 7 hours east and precisely to Kuwait to continue his professional career.

After Nekounam left Al Kuwait SC, Reza Ghoochanjed has repacked him. The news is still not official by Charlton Athletics yet, but it seems that it is a pretty done deal.

Why Al Kuwait SC?

The Kuwaiti league is one of the poorer leagues in the Persian Gulf region. It had no representation in the Asian Champions League for many years although the next edition will see of the Kuwait clubs playing in the ACL. The overall standard of the Kuwait league is way behind the likes of Saudi Arabia, Iran , Qatar and  UAE. The Kuwaiti clubs do not get the generous government support that the other Gulf Arab countries get and even much less that Iranian clubs , which are mostly government-owned anyway. As such ,   the financial structure of the Kuwait clubs and football league is pretty feeble to moderate at best. The infrastructure and the facilities are also of a lower standard than the rest of its neighbors. It seems since the Iraqi invasion in 1990 and the ensuing liberation war , Kuwait has completely forgotten about investment in football.

So , who is it that they can afford the likes of Nekounam and Choochannejad?

Kuwait has many foreign players from as far as Brazil , plenty from the African continents and quite a few Arabs, whoever , these are mostly seventh or eight grade footballers. You would never hear of a player in the stature of Raul Gonzales, the ex-Real Madrid Captain heading to a Kuwaiti club , for example.

With the exceptional and relatively immense wages that Nekounam was getting in Esteghlal , Al Kuwait SC must have either matched or improved on it for Iran’s Captain to be tempted. It would be the same situation with Ghoochannjad who had offers from Qatar and Iranian clubs as well. Al Kuwait is quite obviously, the richest club in Kuwait , although not the most popular one. That title goes to AL Qadisiya and Al Arabi.

On the bright side of this transfer is that Al Kuwait SC will be one of the country’s representatives in the 2014/15 AFC Asian Champions league and many Iranian will be able to see him play. The chances are pretty strong that Al Kuwait will be playing in a group along with an Iranian club.

Nekounam , one step from Osasuna.

Pamplona – Javad Nekounam. Is on the brink of another return to Osasuna, the relegated club from Pamplona , according to the Spanish website Noticias de Navarra

Nekounam has expressed his desire to play for the Spanish club once again. However, it was following the resignation of Miguel Archanco when he made the final decision and pulled the plugs on the talks. And to remember that it was the president who foiled the first attempt for the return of Iran’s Captain in the winter of two seasons ago.

The midfielder started his first spell at Osasuna in 2006 from Sharjah club of UAE. He wore the elastic Red shirt for six seasons playing 157 games and scoring 26 goals. Six years sufficed him to become one of the idols of the crowds  stands of the Sadar with many memorable performances in League, Cup and, above all, in the continental journey of the Reds with Aguirre and Ziganda.

Still fresh in the memory of the osasunismo  (Osasuna fans) that headed goal he scored against Bordeaux in the agonizing extra time that resulted in the qualification of Osasuna for the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup in 2007.

Due to difficult circumstances, Nekounam left Osasuna in the summer of 2012, when the new policy of austerity measures began in the club , with the priority to relieve the club of top paid players. Nekounam ended up in Esteghlal team, one of the Iranian football elite teams , but was loaned to Al Kuwait for the last season.
At 34 ( Born 07/09/1980) the player continues to be Consolidated defensive midfielder in his club and Iran national team, where while serving as leader with another ex Osasuna player, Masoud Shojaei. Masoud will not be continuing in Las Palmas and despite some rumors linking him back with Osasuna, he will play away from Spain.

Singnificantly , it was Nekounam’s good performance at the last World Cup,  that has caused the rekindled interest. That performance is one of the reasons that encouraged the Management Board to accept the return of the Iranian. Talks have been taking place in recent weeks with the Professional Football League (LFP), which has to inform Osasuna if they are allowed to sign new players . The approval is required , due to poor balance sheet of the Pamplona club and their financial struggles for the last few years. It is more than probable that Nekounam signing will be announced tomorrow before traveling to England to start a training camp and playing friendly matches.

Despite his departure, Javad Nekounam has never lost its link with Osasuna. The midfielder maintains continuous contact with several members of the club, both players and employees, and has closely followed the course of events that have happened in the whole of late.

But these events have not lowered the slightest desire to return to Neko wear red. Quite the contrary. The Iranian international has offers on the table from top clubs in his native country, but his desire and his immediate wish is to be with his family back to Pamplona and he is willing to take a significant pay cut to achieve that.
