Mahdavikia resigns from FFIRI Technical Committee

A report on an Iranian sports website has claimed that Mehdi Mahdavikia, the former Team Melli player and the current Head Coach of Omid Team, has resigned his post as a member of the federation’s Technical Committee.

“Tarafdari ” claims that not only Mahdavikia is not willing to be a part of the committee he has shown reluctance in continuing his work with Omid Team (U23) too.

This site writes that FIFA  has sent an invitation to MahdaviKia as the representative of Iran to attend the online meeting of the technical directors of the football federations of the member states, however, in response to this invitation, Mahdavikia said that he is no longer the technical director of FFIRI.

After Mahdavikia’s response to FIFA that he is no longer representing Iran, the world governing football body sends a letter to the Football Federation of Iran FFIRI inquiring about this and asking the Football Federation to introduce a replacement for MahdaviKia to attend the FIFA online meeting.

The expectation is that there are currently two candidates who can represent the FFIRI in this virtual meeting. Mirshad Majedi, the chairman of the Youth Committee and a member of the Board of Directors of the Football Federation, and Bijan Zolfagharansab, who has recently become the chairman of the “Technical and Development Committee” of the Football Federation. The latter’s post is more appropriate for the subject of the meeting.

Earlier, ZolfagharNasab had also announced that he had not been notified of the decision to select him for this post and that it was only speculation.

While Mahadvikia quitting his post is indicative of internal disagreements in the “Technical and Development Committee” or a dispute between Mahdavikia and the FFIRI management, the role of the Technical Committee has been marginalized and damaged during the Queiroz era. It is effectively toothless with no power or authority to do anything of worth to develop football at any level in Iran.

The fact that Mahadvikia agreed to join, was surprising knowing that the committee is no more than a formality and suffers a distinct lack of transparency.

There was no confirmation on the FFIRI website confirming or denying this information.

Skočić : Team Melli list will be announced on Sunday (tomorrow)

Skočić said that the list of Iran’s national team will be published on Sunday after the conclusion of the latest League matches.

in response to the question of whether new players will be invited? He said: “Yes, but our core list does not change much. Individuals who were not in the previous camp may be invited. Our list is not very different. My idea is to give more space to young players. I expect more from young players. “

League quality

“The quality of the league has declined. Perhaps due to Corona and the lack of fans in the stadium. I realize that Iranian players have a strong emotional aspect and the absence of fans’ place in the stadium affects their performance, but I expect more from the young players. ” The head coach of Team Melli added “stating that Iranian football has problems in some positions such as last defense, winger, and midfield, said: “It seems that Iranian football is lacking in these positions. I am not afraid of giving young players a chance. The young player should not start cautiously or conservatively whenever he is given the chance, instead, he must have enough energy and drive to break down the door and impose himself. I want to see more young players. I am always receptive. We must also create a spirit of change in the national team. The player is not supposed to think that because he has been in the national team for 10 years, he has the right to a place unless he has been proven and maintains the required standard.”

Quality players and the Seniors

“Respect for an experienced player is obligatory, but they must be the most prepared and best players on the list. We have lower-quality defenders and midfielders than a good striker” Skocic continued: “Sometimes it is not just a matter of choosing the best player, but also the players who make up the best team. I have to imagine how the communication between the players on the field goes. To build a good team, we must maintain team balance. I can not put seven strikers in the national team. Now there is this imbalance. We have fewer quality players in defense and midfield than in attack. We have high traffic on the offensive line. The place of some players in several positions is still empty to leave my hand open.”

He was asked if this problem would be solved? “We are trying to solve the problem,” he said.” It is not a matter of us being separate from the clubs. With my background working in Iranian clubs, I know the importance of what coaches do. My request to the coaches is to have a two-way relationship with us so that we can figure out the best things for the football of this country. I am grateful to Majid Hosseini” the head coach of the Iranian national football team said regarding the way he treats the players in the team “

“In a team, there are quality players and lower quality players, but I do not differentiate between them. Our priority is the team and everyone must serve the team. A superstar may decide a game, but in the end, it is the team that advances to the World Cup, not the player. We need to understand this difference. Even for me, the players on the bench are often are important because they make you feel comfortable. For example, Majid Hosseini, whose work I really appreciate. He did not play for us in the national team for two years, but he was on the bench with all his energy. I want this mentality. I understand the players whose vision is individual. The coach must always see the big picture. We have a very good team now and I am satisfied with this group.

Support Staff

“Yes, without any of these people, our work would be lame,” Skocic said of the team’s support group. “Doctors have more responsibilities in coronary conditions. Each member of the cadre has his share. My assistants and everyone on the staff contribute to this success. I can not name those who are behind the scenes of the national team. We are all there to provide the ideal conditions for the players. The players are waiting to receive a reward.”

Hashemian

About his Iranian assistant, Vahid Hashemian, Skocic said  “There is nothing but this expectation in the national team and everyone should move forward with humility. Vahid Hashemian works hard. The same is true for the rest. We could not have reached this position if our focus was on the margins. We do our job with full concentration, which is due to the quality of the people who are with the national team. “

Rewards

The head coach of the national team reminded us: the president of the federation has meetings with the minister of sports to solve the problems. “I want the best conditions for the players. We have problems, but they are being addressed. We understand the situation in the country, but the players are waiting to receive their rewards. This is what happens when national team players compare themselves to other countries. For example in Croatia; 60% of the World Cup prize goes to the federation and 40% to the players and coaches. I want the players to have peace of mind. I am not from Iran, but I understand that the players have expectations.”

FFIRI planning early qualification ceremony

While the Football fans in Iran are still awaiting the approval of the National Headquarters against Corona to attend Team Melli’s upcoming matches against Iraq and the UAE, The football federation is planning early qualification to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

the Iranian Football Federation has prepared so that it can hold the best possible ceremony with the presence of special guests. Shahabuddin Azizi Khadem, President of the FFIRI, who had two meetings with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, invited him to watch one of the matches of the Iranian national team on 27th January or 2nd February, which, according to the federation’s website, was agreed by FIFA President. Infantino has moved his headquarters to Doha to oversee the progress and preparation for the World Cup 2022.

The reduction in the number of deaths in the country due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus also raised the hopes of the Football Federation to get approval from the health authorities in the country allowing the attendance of fans in Azadi Stadium, even with limited numbers. It is alleged that the National Headquarters against Corona has verbally agreed to a 30% attendance at all football stadiums, but such instructions have not yet been transmitted t to the Ministry of Sports and then to the Football Federation. On the other hand, the coronavirus mutation called “omicron” has become a serious challenge for the presence of special guests. With 5 days left to play Iraq and 10 days to meet the UAE, Infantino has not yet officially responded to the Iranian Federation’s request to be in Tehran.

However, the public relations department of the Football Federation will continue monitoring developments in this issue until 24 hours before each game. Considering the possibility of Infantino’s imminent trip and the possibility of announcing his readiness, the possibility of the presence of male and female fans in the upcoming matches of the Iranian national team is not certain. Ali Azari Jahromi, the government spokesman, announced last Tuesday that a special meeting had been held between the president of the football federation, the Minister of Sports to prepare for the matches, however, with four days left, there is no sign of online sales of the tickets for the Iraq and UAE matches.

The Iranian national football team will host Iraq on the 27th of January at Azadi Stadium. The victory for Dragan Skucic’s team in each of these matches will result in the early Qualifications of Team Melli to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

12 years later it is confirmed that Ahmadinejad fired Ali Daei!

in April 2009, after  Team Melli’s defeat against Saudi Arabia in the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010  qualifiers, it was suddenly announced that Ali Daei, the head coach of the Team, had been fired. The dismissal came while the Iranian team still had a good chance to advance to the World Cup, but with the dismissal of Daei and the presence of Afshin Ghotbi, Team Melli finally failed to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa and experienced a major setback.

Daei had repeatedly stated after the incident that his dismissal had nothing to do with the Football Federation and that institutions higher than the federation had decided to fire him. Although this claim was initially denied by the then president of the Football Federation, Ali Kafashian, over time, various interviews with federation officials and members of the national team at the time confirmes Daei’s claims.

However, today, Saturday, Mohammad Akhundi, who was the spokesman for the Physical Education Organization at the time, confirmed that the dismissal of Ali Daei, was a decision taken by the office of the Presidency and in particular the president himself (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad).

In this regard, Akhundi said “this decision was taken and announced in the presidential palace. They called me to announce the news, but I said that it was the responsibility of other people and the football federation to do so and not the PEO.” He added: “We refused to announce the dismissal of Ali Daei in the Physical Education Organization.”

The former spokesman for the Physical Education Organization, who was a guest in a radio program, was asked “Is it true that Ahmadinejad took that decision on his own?” He said: “What I know unofficially is that the President himself made this decision, but officially it came from the presidential Palace!. The justification for Daei’s dismissal was the pressure of public opinion, those around the group concluded that Ali was not to continue.

Akhundi was asked if Ali Daei’s dismissal was due to the fact that he did not allow Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to enter the locker room between the two halves of the Iran-Saudi game: “I have no information about this.” A former spokesman for the Physical Education Organization said: “That change (dismissal of Ali Daei) was wrong. If Daei continued, we would have probably qualified to the World Cup.”

Azizi Khadem warning on the defining moments for Iran’s football.

Shehab Azizi Khadem, the head of FFIRI, discussed the dilemma of the statute of the football federation and the deadline of FIFA for the approval of the new law by the government and the parliament:

“The most important issue that I should mention is the charter of this federation. We have a very big challenge ahead. I hope some people do not complicate this issue for no logical reasons. Approval of the amended statute has been granted by the previous government. The esteemed government of the time, the General Assembly of the Football Federation, and FIFA have all approved it and now the final process is seeking the approval of Majlis (parliament). FIFA will demand the endorsement by March 1st, 2022. The exchanges we had with Infantino in Qatar, confirm that FIFA is determined that this amendment must be approved and put in motion and they have set a deadline that we have to answer to by March 1st. I hope that the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) will be able to appease the nation with tact and rationality. “

Azizi Khadem added: “If the Iranian national team qualifies for the World Cup as it rightly deserves and expected, it coincides with the FIFA deadline. In February, Infantino will come to Tehran, which will coincide with the qualification of Team Melli. In these difficult circumstances, we hope to have harmony and not to complicate the issues further.”

The president of the federation said: “Now that the amended statute has been approved by three regulators, General Assembly of Football Federation, FIFA and the government of Iran, we expect that Iranian football will not go into turmoil in the fourth and last step of the process.”

I need to declare this important and crucial issue to ensure that everyone is aware of the facts and progress of a matter which is critical for the nation and its football.

Azizi Khadem thus made it clear that the onus is on the Majlis to approve the new FFIRI Constitution which is in line with the FIFA recommendation and guidelines. The highlight of the amendment is for the independent operation of the Football Federation and the non-interference of the government into its affairs and decision-making process.

Referring to Wilmot’s claim for compensation and damge case in the CAS court, the Head of FFIRI said: “The progress of Wilmot’s case, is that a hearing will be held next week by the legal team. Next Tuesday is a meeting with Wilmot’s legal team. I hope we will be able to reduce the amount of compensation demanded and the final vote will be issued in January.”

Memorandum of collaboration signed between Iran and Qatar

Iran and Qatar have signed a four-year football Memorandum of collaboration commencing before the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The presidents of FFIRI Shehab Azizi Khadem and Sheikh Hamad bin Ahmed Al Thani, President of the Qatar Football Association, attended the signing ceremony earlier today (Thursday) in Doha.  According to the memorandum, the two federations will collaborate in holding friendly matches, exchange of training facilities as well as training camps at all levels of different age categories of their respective national football teams, including men and women. The long-term collaboration between the two sides, which will soon be implemented in various fields, is important due to the good relations between the two countries, ease of logistics and transportation, proximity, and cultural commonalities of the two countries.

With Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup, its state-of-the-art facilities and modern infrastructure will be available to National Iranian football teams in Qatar. In this meeting, Hamidreza Mehr Ali (acting vice president of the FFIRI), Rafiei (legal advisor to the president of FFIRI) and Dragan Skocic (head coach of the national team) accompanied Azizi Khadem. Also present at the meeting was FIFA’S Deputy Secretary-General Football, Mattias Grafström.   Last night on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the FIFA Arab Cup, Azizi Khadem had a meeting with Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, who is scheduled to travel to Iran in February 2022.

Azizi Khadem has traveled to Qatar at the official invitation of the President of the Qatar Football Federation. Qatar will host the Qatar FIFA World Cup in November 2022, and the Iranian national team is just one step away from qualifying for the tournament. With this contract, it can be hoped that the national team will take advantage of Qatar’s sports facilities to hold camps and friendly matches within a year of the tournament.

Team Melli player publish a protest statement after the win against Lebanon.

Team Melli defeated Lebanon 2-1 away in Sidon in the final minutes of the game to complete the first half of the final qualifying round of the World Cup with 13 points and without defeat,

Immediately after the match, the players published a joint statement on social media, highlighting the problems and shortcomings the squad is facing, including the poor quality of the national team kit, non-payment of bonuses, and the Football Federation’s failure to address the team’s difficulties in Lebanon. The statement targeted the officials of FFIRI  and the country’s Sports Ministry for criticism and referred to Team Melli conditions as not worthy of the name of Iran and a team that is top in Asia.

Team Melli will meet Syria in the first return match in five days (Tuesday, November 16). The text of the players’ message is as follows:

We, the national team players, with all our intensity and zeal, and with the support of the honorable people of Iran, reached the top of the table in these rounds without defeat. It is necessary to inform the people and the fans about the poor conditions, the hardship, and the problems that the national team is facing, which are not up to a respectable standard and way below our expectations and the reputation of our country. In terms of logistics and support, it is not even close to the standard of a club team. We have been wearing old jerseys for over a year and we have to wear them again every time after washing.

During this trip to Lebanon, we encountered many problems, including the training facilities, but there was no proper protest from the federation officials. Contrary to promises and obligations, the national team players have not yet received their bonuses after several months have passed. Since our qualification to the next round in Bahrain, there has been no contact or follow-up from the country’s sports officials. Our victories have become routine for them and instead of supporting the squad more, they have completely forgotten us. This situation is not at all suitable for a team that is at the top of the Asian rankings and is preparing for the World Cup.”

Iranian Females in Azadi

Fans are still awaiting on the verdict on Azadi.

The President of FFIRI Shahabuddin Azizi Khadem declared that the verdict in the case of Marc Wilmots against his federation in the Supreme Court of Sports is still pending: “We are currently waiting. We have time until the 29th of October. We hope that what is in the interest of national football will come to fruition. No Iranian is willing to waste even a penny from the pockets of these people in a contract in which this federation was not involved!!”

The remark is quite controversial coming from the head of the federation that is supposed to have signed a contract for the coach of Team Melli. All football federations of the world select, employ, and sign contracts with coaches to manage their national teams. What transpires from Azizi Khadem is that the FFIRI had no say in the contract of the Belgian coach. That raises many questions including who forced this unsuited coach on Team Melli ? and worst, why did the previous head of the FFIRI, namely one Mehdi Taj accept this failure of a coach?

Azizi Khadem continued “We hope the final verdict is not damaging to Iranian football rights.”

Regarding the introduction of video referee assistance (VAR) technology to Iran, he said  “The information that I have is that the managers of the relevant company will arrive in Tehran tonight for study and planning. They will be in Iran for about 12 days and we have agreed on trials of VAR in four Team Melli games. Necessary instructions have also been given to the league organization to list the stadiums. This is a very important and historic step for the national football, club, and refereeing community to benefit from VAR technology in the near future “

The President of the Football Federation was asked about the chances of allowing female spectators into the stadium for the match against South Korea, He said “Our colleagues are studying all the relevant details and health protocols. I hope the verdict on the presence of the fans in the game against South Korea is positive,  which is an important issue for us. Mr. Kamrani Far had a meeting today regarding the subject and the maximum number of fans allowed, which will be announced by himself.”

Azizi Khadem dodged the original question and refused to commit to allowing females into Azadi stadium. Of course, in Iran, such decisions are beyond the football federation or the Ministry of Youth and Sports authority and jurisdiction.

Iran will be hosting South Korea on the 12th of October in Matchday 4 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers.

Azizi-Khadem’s theory on Team Melli victories!

While the Team Melli fans and many observers praised the performance and the result of Team Melli against Iraq leading to a precious victory, as a result of collective efforts from the head coach to players and support staff, there comes an individual to offer a completely different perspective to this victory.

There always seems to be one individual who manages to undermines the efforts of those who achieved the victory by sending the wrong message.

These messages or series of obscure messages starting from the Syria game came from non-other than the Head of FFIRI. Azizi-Khadem was and still is under heavy criticism for his administration’s failure to fully prepare and support Team Melli for the third round of FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

Lack of adequate financial support, late scheduling and setup of the training camp, and failure to arrange friendly internationals matches are a few of many of his administration failures. However, the man is now claiming that the victory against Iraq is nothing but a “divine intervention”.

A man whose election to the head of FFIRI has raised a lot of eyebrows and shouts of corruption, in a series of statements to the media, has in fact downplayed everything by asserting “Hands of God” theory as the reason for Iran’s victory.

We have seen the hand of divine support, guidance, and mercy of God in this victory, and we hope that these victories will be lasting and continuous and that we deserve this grace and grace of God.”

“In the core of our existence, is faith and trust in God. Effort, diligence, hard work, planning, etc. are also fruitful (…)

“Along with strategic planning and effort and practice … we will and will continue to recognize and emphasize that the essential element of trusting in God and divine secret grace.” !!

We ask God to make our football a means of growth and material and spiritual upliftment for us and our society.” Said Azizi-Khadem, after the Team Melli victory against Syria, also considered that victory as the result of “the blessed prayer of the world” for the national team!!

Why would the Whole World Pray for Iran’s victory, he did not explain!

The insiders and skeptics, who are quite a few, consider Aziz-Khadem’s rhetoric as a defense mechanism against his feeble and incompetent management. The man had no decency to credit the players and the coaching staff for a job well done.  Another objective of his is to limit the demands for funds to support Team Melli like setting proper training camps and playing friendly games.

Azadi is confirmed as the venue for the Syria game, without the fans!

After several years of struggles and follow-ups, Tehran is finally confirmed as the host of Iran’s home matches in the FIFA World Cup 2022  Qatar in the qualifying round.

Shahabuddin Azizi Khadem, said about the plans of the national football team: “an important event just happened after years as we finally gained our right to host the first game against Syria in Tehran, which can help Team Melli a lot.”

Azizi Khadem, then went on to brief the reporters about the preparation plans for the game He added: “With intensive and scientific planning in the new management of the federation and the official support that we have realized, it is now possible for our fans to watch their national team in a competitive match. A lot of effort has been made in this regard. I would also like to thank the Radio and Television Organization for its excellent cooperation with us in this regard. We have set up a special staff to prepare for the World Cup, and Mr. Foroughi is present on behalf of the IRIB. We hope that other government officials will be added to the committee in our headquarters. Football is the manifestation of our national unity.”

The president of the federation said ” all the work of the issue of visa to attend for the Syrian delegation has been carried out and handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Syrian team will arrive on Monday, August 28th. Observers and the refereeing team will also travel to Tehran. Everything is well planned and we are all ready for the game in Azadi against Syria.”

Azizi Khadem then carried on praising the effort of his management is arranging the match in Azadi, suggesting that many countries have been deprived of hosting due to Covid19.

Regarding fans’ attendance, Azizi Khadem stated regarding the presence of spectators in the matches hosted by Iran: in consultation with AFC, which has its own restrictions,  in order to comply with the regulations and satisfy the public opinion, it is unlikely that the fans will be allowed.

“After that, we have to travel to Doha, and the third game is in the UAE and the fourth game is here against South Korea, we will probably be able to allow those who were vaccinated with a special card to gain entry. “

The president of the FFIRI substituted the fans who are customarily considered as the 12 players at home games, with the Head of IRIB!!!

He said: “The twelfth friend was the emphasis of the president of the Radio and Television Organization”

Aziz Khadem’s praise to the head of IRIB that has never paid a single dollar for TV broadcast rights and practically owes football tens of millions of dollars in back pay is a true sound of desperation in a country where the one and only broadcaster considers itself above the law.

This time, there was no other option. It was either IRIB pays for the broadcast to AFC and FIFA or Iran will not be granted any rights to play its home game in Tehran. It is not clear if FIFA is compensated by IRIB for illegally broadcasting official matches without paying the right.
