Ali Karimi out of Team Melli squad for the World Cup

Ali Karimi , Team Melli player is the first casualty of Team Melli for the FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia

The Sepahan Esfahan midfield player suffered a back injury during training and was declared as unable to continue training for some time and is definite to miss the squad to Russia.

Karimi was in the first group of 35 players announced by Queiroz and had a fairly good chance to make the final 23 players list but he has fallen a victim of the injury a day before the team meets Uzbekistan for a friendly match in Azadi Stadium in preparation for the World Cup.

Biranvand’s poor form, a worry for Team Melli!

One would be excused to notice that the two goalkeepers that have performed so admirably in the AFC Asian Champions League matches yesterday are nowhere near being Team Melli’s first choice .

The fact is that one Alireza Biranvand, a lackluster keeper with a questionable attitude and prone to errors, has been the number one choice for Carlos Queiroz and that is worrying.

Biranvand , the guardian of Persepolis has been quite poor this season. Single handedly he cost his team a precious win in Abu Dhabi last night conceding 3 goals, all of which could have been saved with some agility and better effort.  Young Goalkeepers like Biranvand at such age normally develop and reach their peak at a much later stage of their careers unlike other outfield players. Biranvand has played for Team Melli youth teams and forced himself to the senior team on sheer merits at the time that Iran had a dearth of goalkeeping talents.

However, Biranvand , seem to have stopped developing, but even worst , he is losing his touch too. There is a long list of shortcoming that has marred his performance particularly this season, from failure to judge the flight of crosses to poor reaction, to poor timings of coming out for a ball. Biranvand has cost his club many goals and lots of points, the type of which he had not experienced before at Persepolis.

Mehdi Rahmati

Admittedly, the problems he had with his club, had affected him. Contractual and financial issues, the lure of better contract at other clubs resulted in him requesting a transfer while he was tied by a contract. The club turned down his request, which resulted in Birnavand’s rebellion, absence from training and refusing to attend team meetings. He was the target of the boo-boys amongst the passionate Persepolis fans in Azadi. Branko Ivankovic was ready to kick him out of the team for his petulant attitude and discord he created in the team while they were fighting on two fronts, to win the league title and the AFC Champions league. Eventually, Biranvand came to his senses and returned, but traces of that episode are evident in his poor performances following that period.

On the other hand,  Zob Ahan goalkeeper and number 3 choice in Team Melli , Rashid Mazaheri was majestic in his performance against Esteghlal in the same stage of the AFC champions league match. Estaghlal lost to late penalty  for Zob Ahan to take a slender lead to Azadi. Despite that eye catching performance in goal for Zob Ahan, It would be very difficult to name Mazaheri as the best goalkeeper in Iran, because right in the opposite end of the field was none other than Seyed Mehdi Rahmati whose saves and reflexes was world class. An outcast in Team Melli, his skills and experience has saved Esteghlal time after time in that match. It was a sterling performance from the veteran keeper and Rahmati was at his best.

Two great performances from two Iranian keepers in the same match, was the highlight of this round of AFC Champions league. Two exceptional performances that has brought back some of the confidence lost in Iranian keepers and their qualities. Queiroz has no more than 3 games to check on his choice of goalkeeper for the World Cup. Birnavand has served him well and the Portuguese head coach is known to be loyal to his troops. But he has also shown that he can be demanding and would not hesitate to make drastic changes or drop star players if their performances and forms are not up to his standard.

Every player makes mistakes, and with goalkeepers by their nature being the last line of defence, theirs will be the costliest. Queiroz has one serious problem on his hand at that end.

Fifa gives green light to Sierra Leone friendly in Azadi

Sierra Leone Stars hopes of meeting World Cup-bound Iran in a friendly encounter in Tehran on Saturday, 17 March has been confirmed by football world governing body, Fifa.

The contest will take place in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

A Fifa spokesperson told Football Sierra Leone UK via email that there was a need for proper clarification ahead of schedule match.

The match was uncertain after FIFA’s recognised SLFA head, Isha Johansen, and her Scribe; Chris Kamara informed the organisation that they were unaware of the ‘friendly.

Extracts of the communication read -“For the captioned international friendly match, please be informed there was a need for some clarifications before the necessary authorisation could be extended, but the said match will go ahead in Tehran.”

It could be recalled that on October 2017, Isha Johansen and Kamara were both ordered by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to step aside following charges of abuse of office and pilfering of public funds. The matter is ongoing.

In spite of the above, Fifa says they recognise the Johansen leadership until Integrity checks and elections are conducted.

The arranged test scheduled will be Iran’s first 2018 World Cup warm-up encounter and the first between the two nations.

Leone Stars including just three foreign-based players will take on the best Asian football team.

The foreign-based are Finish-based TP-47 striker Thomas Koroma, JS Hercules midfielder Abdul Sesay and attacker Abu Bakarr Kargbo from fourth-tier German side Berliner AK 07.

The two countries have a very good international relation and Sierra Leone for the first time considered to play a friendly by a team heading to a World Cup.

The African minnows ranked 98th while Iran is the best Asian football team and 33rd in the world.

Iran are in Group B at the FIFA World Cup alongside Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

Carlos Queiroz’s men will open their Russia 2018 campaign with a match against Morocco at Saint Petersburg on June 15, before taking on Spain in Kazan on 20 June.

FFIRI taking AFC and Saudis to court.

Mehdi Taj, the President of Iran’s football association FFIRI has announced that a delegation headed by Ali Kaffashian will proceed to Switzerland to present Iran’s case against the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Saudi Arabia.

After the breaking of political relation between the two countries, the Saudi Football authorities refused to allow its teams to travel to Iran citing security fears. The AFC , which is led by a Bahraini Shaikh, and no doubt influenced by dominating Arab lobby in the Asian Ruling body, immediately accepted the Saudi argument and ordered both countries to play their matches against each other on neutral ground. This move, not only put a huge burden on Iranian teams which are already suffering financial hardship but also deprived them from that world-famous passionate support they usually receive in Azadi stadium.

Iran’s FFIRI grudgingly accepted the AFC ruling initially , however, it consulted several law firms and international legal consultancies to determine the legitimacy of the ruling by AFC. Neither United Nation nor FIFA or any other world bodies for that matter, has announced that Iran is a war zone or it is an unsafe venue for football or other  sport activities. The Saudi move was purely politically motivated and AFC had failed to execute its due diligence when it issued the ruling against Iran. The AFC ruling was against AFC’s own principles about politics in football.

As recently as last month, the AFC has written to its Member Associations reiterating that all stakeholders involved in Asian football must respect the principle of political neutrality.

The letter sent by the AFC stressed that the principle is a cornerstone of both the AFC and of the international sports movement, and is reflected in Article 3.2 of the AFC Statutes, which states: “the AFC is neutral in all matters of politics and religion”.

In the case that FFIRI has lodged in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ,  the Iranians are demanding that AFC reverse its ruling and allow Iranian teams and clubs to exercise its right to play at home grounds in front of its own crowds,  in addition to a demand  for compensation for all the expenses incurred by travelling Iranian teams and officials. The defendant is AFC and its head, Shk. Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain,

The case put forward by FFIRI will be quite interesting for Qatar. There is very little doubt that Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain teams will refuse to play in Qatar putting due to the recent break of relationship. As such this will put immense pressure on the AFC to obey the Saudi lobby and traet Qatari teams the same as it treated the Iranians. Qatar, like Iran , is a safe country and will be hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022.  No doubt that the Saudi lobby will claim some terrorism allegation for its case against Qatar.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS; French: Tribunal arbitral du sport, TAS) is an international quasi-judicial body established to settle disputes related to sport through arbitration. Its headquarters are in Lausanne(Switzerland) and its courts are located in New York City, Sydney and Lausanne. Temporary courts are established in current Olympic host cities.

Team Melli on track for the Uzbekistan match

Team Melli is on course in preparation for the crucial match against Uzbekistan on Monday.

FIFA announced the name of the referees for the match. Ahmad Abu Baker Said Al Kaf from Oman will be assisted by Hamed Suleiman and Abu Baker Saleem. The fourth referee is Omar Mubarak all from the Sultanate of Oman.

The Omani referee was the fourth official in 4 matches in the recent FIFA World Cup U-20 championship 2017 in South Korea. He was not assigned any matches to referee. His last international match was in Sydney on 27th March 2017 refereeing the match between Australia and UAE which the host won 2-0.

Meanwhile, the FFIRI has encouraged the fans not to go to Azadi Stadium in matchday unless they carry a ticket on hand. The ticket sales for the match against Uzbekistan is all on-line through a dedicated website. No tickets will be sold on the match day from kiosks.

FIFA was given assurance by the FFIRI and the security authorities that strict measures and tight security will be implemented on match day following the terrorist attacks Parliament and the Ayatollah Khomeini mausoleum a few days back.

Carlos Queiroz is relying on his team’s solid defence with a perfect defensive record of not conceding a goal since the opening match, while he will be deploying  a powerful offensive line up front to unsettle the Uzbek defenses. Azmoun has been in top form , while both Ansarifard and Ghoochannejad had their best ever forms playing in Europe. domestically , Mehdi Taremi has been the best Iranian forward and the league’s top scorer.

To supplement the forwards, Jahanbakhsh and Vahid Amiri will be feeding the attackers with their runs and crosses on the flanks , leaving Dejagah and Ezzatollahie to cover the middle of the field.

There are no injuries worries to report in the squad , however , Ashkan Dejagah is short of match practise and made a short appearance for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga following a long injury. Ramin Rezaeian is without a club after he was sacked from Persepolis , nevertheless the defender form was quite good against Montenegro in the recent 2-1 win.

Iran 1-0 China : Another firm step towards the World Cup 2018

Team Melli defeated China 1-0 in the seventh round of the FIFA World Cup 2018 Asian zone qualifiers to cement its lead on group A. Iran now leads the group with 17 points , four ahead of closest rival Korea Republic with 3 rounds to go.

The match was played in front of capacity crowd estimated to be over 110,000 fans played early in the afternoon, The doors of the stadium had to be closed early as the fans were still flocking in with the stadium already full.

China which defeated Korea in the last round , was hoping to repeat the same against Iran to have any chance of reaching the World Cup for only its second time in history. A large number of Chinese fans all wearing red , were in Azadi;s special guests section cheering their team. Marcello Lippi has successfully led the Chinese in the last two matches.

Taremi celebrates

The first half :

Queiroz made 3 changes in the line up from the Qatar match including Ghoochannejad replacing Azmoun in forward line, while Shojae replaced Hajsafy. TM did not waste much time going forward as Ghoochannejad shot powerfully in the 6th minute for the Chinese keeper Zeng Cheng to parry over the bar for corner.

Following a series of slick passing moves in the 20th minute, Jahanbakhsh fired a shot that just shaved the bar

Next serious threat on Chinese goal was on minute 35 where Taremi’s shot was saved by the outstretched legs of Zeng Cheng.

Team Melli continued its assault on China’s goal and should have scored a minute later after another set of passes following quick interchange of positions. Masoud Shojaei, the captain of the team, sent a measured ball to the fast advancing Milad Mohammadi on the left flank. The Grozny player controlled the ball nicely, passed his marker and was one on one with Zeng Cheng. However, with the angle closing and becoming acute , Mohammadi shot was met by the excellent Chinese custodian, and sent to the corner.

Reza Ghoochannejad vs China WCQ 2018

5 minutes later , another marvelous passing game, this time from the right resulted in Ghafoori sending an inch perfect pass to Shojaei. The Captain shot cleanly but once again Zeng Cheng saved China’s blushes. The ensuing corner saw Taremi’s scissor kick marginally missing target.

The first half ended goal-less.

It only took 30 seconds in the second half for Iran to take the lead. After a series of shamble clearances by the Chinese defense, Taremi found the ball at his feet inside the six yards box. His halfhearted lefty shot beat the wrong footed  Zeng Cheng and finally passed the goal line.

It was much deserved and long waited goal for Team Melli.

China on the other hand, showed very little initiative and ambition. Only late in the second half that the Chinese really pressed hard to score an equalizer , which incidentally would not have made a big difference in their chances.

Iran now awaits the crucial encounter at Azadi with Uzbekistan. A win, will guarantee Iran early qualification.

Korean KI SUNG-YUENG admits to Team Melli’s strength & organizations.

Tehran: Ki Sung-yueng blamed a demanding travel schedule for his below-par performance as Korea Republic slipped to their first defeat of their FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 qualifying campaign against Islamic Republic of Iran.

Ki (pictured, right) and his compatriots were comprehensively outplayed in their 1-0 loss against Carlos Queiroz’s side, with the defeat dropping the nine-time FIFA World Cup finalists into third place in Group A behind Iran and Uzbekistan.

And with Ki, along with several other members of Korea’s Europe-based contingent forced to amass significant air miles to feature in both games, the 27-year-old believes the travel had a negative impact on their performance.

“We are a little bit disappointed, but it’s always difficult,” the Swansea City midfielder told the-AFC.com. “I have to fly from London to Korea to play a game and then fly again to Iran in very harsh circumstances. Maybe some people will say it’s an excuse but it is hard to play in these games.

“Iran are very organised and defensively they are very good, and physically they are a big team. We didn’t handle that very well in the game. But we don’t need to be disappointed because there are a lot of games to come which we can win and we can get a good result in the next game. We need to find out what went wrong and then improve in the next game.”

The Iranians dominated proceedings and won thanks to Sardar Azmoun’s solitary goal in the 25th minute, handing the Koreans their first loss of the final phase of qualifying for Russia 2018.

The defeat leaves Korea on seven points from their first four games, two behind second-placed Uzbekistan and a further point adrift of Group A leaders Iran. Uli Stielike’s side face the Uzbeks in their next game in Jeju on November 15 and Ki is confident he and his team mates can bounce back in the coming games.

“It’s a hard situation, always because Iran is one of the toughest teams in Asia,” said Ki. “I heard they stopped the league for three weeks for the national team, so as a team they are very organised and their team work is very good. And also it’s always hard in this stadium. There will be some reasons but I don’t want to say why we lost the game. Maybe we aren’t good enough, but I don’t know.

“But I believe my team mates and I have enough quality to do well in our next games. This game was really a bit difficult and there are a lot of circumstances that made it very difficult. Our next game is at home and then we have two games in March, so we need to look forward to winning those games.”

Last minutes goals ensures a winning start for Team Melli

Team Melli defeated Qatar 2-0 in Azadi stadium in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2018 Qualification rounds. Two goals from Reza Ghoochannejad and Alireza Jahanbaksh in the added times of the match , ensured Iran grabs all the 3 points and heads the group on goal difference.

In a tightly balanced match , the players of both teams failed to break open each others defences and at the end of the match they seemed to be content with a draw. Qatar would have been the much happier side with one point.  However , a sudden turn of events, a momentary lack of concentration  turned things around.

When the referee announced a 6 minutes added time , it was ominous for the Qataris. Their usual or in fact,  classical time wasting and faking injury bounced back against them.

A serious blunder by Qatar goalkeeper Amine Lecomte-Addani in the 94th minute when he gifted Ansarifard with a ball which the Iranian Forward subsequently lost from a tackle by Qatar defender , the ball conveniently reached Reza Ghoochannejad lurking to the left and the sub forward finished  in style for the Azadi to explode in celebration.

The match was stopped for 5 minutes after the goal when the Qatari bench players entered the pitch followed by the Iranian bench. Following a pandemonium and eventually when sanity prevailed , the excellent Sri Lankan referee whistled for re-start and the goal stood. One minute after re-start of the game , Ando Teymourian sent a delightful ball to Alireza Jahanbaksh on the right flank. The winger dribbled past two defenders before sending his shot to the extreme right of the hapless Qatar keeper to score Iran’s second with this killer punch.

The match was never easy for Iran against a solid and highly organized defense.

Qatar proved to be a tough opponent for Team Melli as the Persian Gulf nation managed to frustrate the host from the first half.  It was balanced half with both teams having chances to score but the finishings left a lot to be desired

Team Melli midfield despite the good performance by Dejagah and Ezatollahie ,  could not influence the match nor properly feed the two forwards Azmoun and Taremi.  The few good balls sent by the duo were all wasted due to the poor finishing and some wayward shots into goal from. Jahanbakhsh was a shadow of himself on the right flank ,  which did not help the team while the left flank saw the better side of the team with Dejagah and supported by the excellent Hajsafy.

The defense of Team Melli was solid however the temperament Jalal Hosseini is worrying , while the slowness of Montazeri was telling.  Hosseini would easily get frustrated, and despite being the oldest and most senior players , he was far from exemplary in his actions. Ramin Rezaeian, who incidentally has not played a single league match this season and is club-less,  was awfully short of form and perhaps the worst player of the half along with Taremi

speaking of temperaments, the match threatened to boil over near the end of the half as Qatar frustrated team Mell, while the Iranian players took their frustration in form of protesting or committing uncalled for silly fouls.

Hassan Al Haydoos , the Qatari winger gave Iran defense some real test and was quite a handful.

Not much changed in the second half except that Team Melli were getting more frustrated , playing in haste and in angry mood. Qatar players were content in wasting time, hitting Iran on the counter and closing their defense by packing the midfield and inside the box.

Perhaps it was a heartbreak for Qatar , but they only have themselves to blame for loss of concentration

This was the most precious three points that Team Melli has gained in many years. A real releif for Carlos Queiroz and 80,000 fans in Azadi.

Iran and Qatar first met in December 1988 in Doha during the AFC Asian Cup 1988. That match resulted in 2 -0 win for Team Melli with Karim Bavi and Farshad Peyous scored Iran goals in Al Ahli Stadium.

First win for Qatar came after the fifth attempt when Team Melli under Mayeli-Kohan was going through a turmoil period in their quest to qualify for the World Cup 1998. In Doha, while needing a win to qualify directly to the World Cup , Iran lost to Qatar 2-0. That resulted in dismissal of Mayeli-Kohan as the head coach of Team Melli.

The two teams have been meeting regularly in regional and Continental competitions including WAFF, AFC Asian Cup , FIFA World Cup.

Qatar has always been a tough opponent for Iran and the results have been close bar a one time 6 -1 drubbing by Team Melli in WAFF competition in 2008.

Throughout the years , Qatar leagues has been a popular destination for Iranian players. It was the very first step in professionalism for a lot of them. Even before the rich Qatar Star League was established , players like Hamid Derakhshan , Farshd Peyous , Karim Bavi and later on Ali Daei , Karim Bagheri  and Ali Karimi were attracted to play in Qatar. Lucrative contracts , easy life style , large Iranian expatriate community and secured future was the main reasons behind this attraction.

With the introduction of a full-fledged rich professional league in Qatar under the full support of the government, Qatar Star League QSL attracted the best of Iranian footballers many of them preferring it to European league.  Ali Karimi transfer from Bayern Munich started the ball rolling. Currently, Ashkan Dejagah, Masoud Shojae, Morteza Pouraliganji, Mohammad Noori, Mehrdad Pooladi, Javad Nekounam, Mojtaba Jabbari and Pejman Montazeri make their living in the QSL

Azadi stadium is becoming a full seater.

The Minister of Youth and Sport inspected the ongoing work in Azadi stadium to convert the jewel of Iranian crown into a full seater venue.

FIFA has put a partial ban on the stadium due to the fact that the higher level section was consisting of concrete slab and spectators had to suffer being seated on such a rough surface. That ban reduced the capacity of Azadi stadium to less than half.

The Sport Ministry managed to fork out a budget to upgrade the stadium especially since Iran is involved in the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers starting next September.

Mr. Mahmoud Goudarzi spoke to the media after concluding his inspection tour and assured the public that the seats will be ready before the match against Qatar on September 1st. “We have been promised the delivery of the stadium 10 days before the match. I am confident that we will have all the seats ready by then”. “The stadium capacity will be reduced to 78,116 all seated.” the minister declared.

Asked about the request by Carlos Queiroz to move the Team Melli practise sessions to Azadi Stadium , the Minister declined such request and said that “Azadi is a venue for matches and not a practise ground. The football federation must find a suitable place for Team Melli to practise”. Responding to another question from a reporter on whether this Stadium will be handed over to Esteghlal and Persepolis, Mr. Goudarzi rediculed such claims “This is meaningless. This stadium belongs to the people of Iran, it makes no sense at all to hand it over  such a grand venue to two clubs only”

Goudarzi said that by the instruction of the President, a technical team has been inspecting the stadium to check the safety level and problems of water seepage and accumulation. This team has already carried out the inspection and are in the process of finalizing its recommendations and report.
