Francisc Mészáros, also known as Ferenc Mészáros, was a notable Hungarian footballer and coach who had a diverse career both on and off the field. Born on May 5, 1919, in Mužla, Czechoslovakia, Mészáros played as a defender for several clubs, including Dorogi, Újpest, and Braga.
Early Career and Playing Days
Mészáros had a distinguished playing career, representing both Hungary and Romania at the international level. His versatility and defensive skills earned him a place in various clubs across Europe.
Transition to Coaching
After retiring as a player, Mészáros transitioned into coaching. He managed several teams, including the Syrian national team in 1954¹. His coaching journey eventually led him to Iran.
Tenure with Iran National Football Team
In 1959, Mészáros took on the role of head coach for the Iran national football team to replace Hossein SADEGHIANI. His appointment marked a significant moment as he became one of the early foreign coaches to lead the team. During his tenure, Mészáros focused on developing the team's tactical approach and improving their international competitiveness.
Mészáros started with Team Melli on quite a spectacular note when he defeated the favorite Israeli National Team 3-0 in the qualifier of the Asian Nations Cup in Kerala, India on the 5th Dec 1959. However, despite a W3-D1-L2 record, Team Melli failed to qualify and hence the match against India which Iran won 2-1 against India on 15th Dec 1959 was his last.
The failure to qualify for the Asian Nations Cup 1960, was a big disappointment for the Iranian football federation. On return to Iran, Mészáros' contract was canceled and hence the first trial of a foreign coach in Iran's football ended on a bitter note.
Legacy
Francisc Mészáros passed away on September 21, 1977, but his contributions to football, both as a player and a coach, are remembered. His time with the Iran national team is a testament to his dedication to the sport and his ability to adapt and lead in diverse environments¹².
