Alireza Mansourian, the ex-Team Melli player was appointed as an interim coach for the match against Russia in Abu Dhabi.
After the contract termination with Afshin Ghotbi following the elimination of Iran in the quarter-final match of the Asian Cup 2011, the federation could not recruit a coach in time for the match against Russia, hence Mansourian was appointed to lead the team in Abu Dhabi.
That single match at the helm of the team was a resounding success as Iran beat the star-studded Russians who had the likes of Andre Arshavin, the Arsenal player, and Roman Pavlyuchenko, Tottenham forward amongst them. The only goal was scored in the dying minutes of the match.
