Mostafavi played for Tehran Javan, Taj and Persepolis, as well as the Iranian national football team. One of his best club games was during the game against Bank Melli Tehran, where he opened the scoring for his team Taj Tehran and scored further 5 times ending the match with a 7-0 win for Taj. After retirement from playing, he went into management and was appointed as CEO of Persepolis Tehran. He was also a member of the board of directors of Nasiji Mazandaran Club.
Mostafavi was able to lead the Iranian national team to the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France after 20 years in the guise of the president of the Football Federation. Mostafavi was the president of the Football Federation in the famous Iran-Australia match. Later, according to Dariush Mostafavi, then-President Seyyed Mohammad Khatami ordered his removal for political reasons so that his friend Safaei Farahani could replace him.
Dariush Mostafavi was banned from all football activities for life on November 17, 2010, by a Board ruling into Professional Football Violations. The reason for this life ban was his complaint against the Iranian Football federation to judicial authorities outside of football.
