Zurich: The Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup has set the date for the third-place playoff in the Asian qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a FIFA media release has announced.
The third-placed team in Group B will face its counterpart from Group A at home on September 6 while the return match will take place on September 10.
Group A qualifying action continues on Tuesday when 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts Qatar face Korea Republic at the Seoul World Cup Stadium and Uzbekistan host Lebanon in Tashkent. Meanwhile in Group B on the same day Australia entertain Oman in Sydney while runaway leaders Japan take on Jordan at the King Abdullah International in Amman.
Undefeated Japan currently sit top of Group B with 13 points from five matches, eight clear of Australia, Iraq and Oman, with Jordan propping up the table with four points.
Group A is a much-tighter affair with Uzbekistan leading the way with eight points, just one point ahead of Korea Republic, Iran and Qatar. Lebanon is bringing up the rear with four points.
The Koreans, semi-finalists on home soil at the 2002 World Cup, have a significantly better goal difference than the rest of the chasing pack and have also played one game less than the other four teams in Group A.
