Pooladi is suspended in Iran

Mehrdad Pooladi has been suspended by the football league as a result of a ruling by the Government organization for employments.

The ruling has been issued because Pooladi has failed to produce a genuine “Certificate of Release from Military Service.” When the Al Shahaniya player was summoned by the authorities either to produce different documents or proceed on the mandatory 2 years military service, Pooladi , however , failed to show up. At some stage , his continuous failure to turn up might end up quite costly if he is labeled as a deserter.

As such, Pooladi being suspended from football activities in Iran , he will not be selected for Team Melli and as of now , it is pretty certain that the best performing Iranian player in the FIFA World Cup 2014 will be missing from the roster for the AFC Asian Cup 2015.

The ruling does not affect Pooladi’s playing outside of Iran and it is not binding for his Qatari club.

Whenever Gholamhossein was playing for us up front at Taj , we always felt that we are winning. One of most beautiful memories of Gholamhossein Mazloomi in Team Melli was his goal against Kuwait. The ball was crossed to Mazloomi, one of the best headers of the Ball in Iran’s history. Mazloomi jumped to the ball and with his body posture he mislead the Kuwaiti Goalkeeper (Ahmad Al Traboulsi) and wrong-footed him to think that he will head to the right, which was the side that Al Traboulsi jumped, Mazloomi however coolly headed to the left far away from Al Traboulsi who could only watch go into the net away from him. It was like some of the players who wrong-fioot goalkeepers during a penalty kick that you see nowadays,  the ball and goalkeeper are two different places.”

Azmoun seals Team Melli’s 3rd consecutive win over the Koreans.

Tehran

Team Melli defeated South Korea 1-0 in a match in a friendly match in Azadi stadium on Tuesday Evening. The only goal was scored from a free kick by Nekounam which hit the left post and rebounded on the right one before the rushing Azmoun headed the rebound into the goal in the 82nd minute.

The poorly attended match is the only official match of Team Melli in its preparation for the AFC Asian cup. South Korea , with the new appointed coach , the German Uli  Stielike had seven players change from the last time the two met in Ulsan , while Queiroz stuck to his old guards except for the forced change with Pooladi being excluded due to military service issues.

Ehsan Hajsafy took the left back position as Beikzadeh was injured and played an excellent game in that position.

Korean fans including females in Azadi Stadium

The slow starting match was suddenly came alive when the Koreans made several serious moves starting on the 9th when Hajsafi cleared a ball right of Heung-Min Son,

A minute later Heung-Min Son weaved passed his marker to shoot a powerful ball that Haghighi managed to parry for a corner. The sustained Koreans attack when Iran managed a counter-attack that threatened the Korean keeper.

The first half continued with a slow pace before Team Melli’s best chance of the match went astray. On the 36th minute Reza Ghoochahjad shoot powerfully into the goal , Jin-Hyeon Kim had difficulty in controlling the ball and only managed to deflect it in the path of Ando Teymourian. The Esteghlal midfielder had enough time to control the ball and a clear path into the goal , but he shoot wide from close range for Iran’s best match to be wasted.

The last serious action of the first half was created by the dangerous Heung-Min Son whose powerful shot was saved by Haghighi

Scuffle near the end of the match

In the 2nd half the match tempo decreased as both teams concentrated in keeping the ball in the middle of the field.  Despite the Koreans being more energetic and active , with their younger team , their final ball was always going to be handled well by the excellent Team Melli defense or Haghighi in the goal. The Rubin Kazan keeper who is on loan to a Portuguese club was faultless and his timing was perfect on the crosses, an attribute that was found wanting in many of the former Team Melli goalkeepers.

A few half-hearted threatening moves by both teams was taking the game into a sleepy mode when the Uzbek referee whistled for a foul on Omid Ebrahimi by the Koreans right outside the box. There was no question who was taking the free kick with Nekounam building a name for himself as the one who terrorizes the Koreans.

Captain Nekounam beautifully struck ball hit the let post fort before rebounding behind the keeper to the right post , bouncing ball met gallantly by the 19 years old substitute Sardar Azmoun to head home from close range despite the desperate attempt by the Korean keeper Jin-Hyeon Kim to stop him.

Tempers flared in the closing stages, as the Korean players reacted poorly to time wasting tactics from their Iranian counterparts.

The apathy shown by the fans was highlighted in th poor attendance in Azadi stadium. Despite Team Melli’s win , the team has no change of strategy , and soon ran out of ideas when approaching the target. The midfield , despite being the highest experience of the 3 lines was also the poorest. The midfielders failing to feed Ghoocahnejad and Jahanbakhsh with any ball worthy of mention. Both the forwards were substituted without really being given the service they deserved. Despite the collective poor midfield, Dejagah , was arguably the best player. The midfield m however , was guilty of keeping the ball far too much , resulting in him being double teamed and easily losing the balls. He was also slow on some passing failure to spot free players. However, Dejagah was the player who created the most number of offensive moves troubling the Koreans to no end.

The absolute worst performer was Masoud Shojaei whose continuous inclusion in Team Melli is becoming a scandalous affair. His contribution to the team continues to be meagre, and paltry while he is taking a valuable place of young and emerging players.

The defenders were excellent despite a few scares when the fast Korean players managed to dribble past one or two, however there was always the final defender to deal with the threat and clear the ball. As a group , including Haghighi in goal , the defense is solid and still looks the best of the lot.

The apathy of the fans was clear in the performance of the team. Tactically speaking , it was another poor showing by Queiroz whose hands are so known by the other teams. The performance does not augur well for Team Melli and rather worrying , although the result was quite sweet especially against their nemesis South Koreans.

A hat trick of wins, is quite satisfying and morale boosting against one of the better Asian teams.  It might even be a catalyst for a change of mentality by Queiroz in deploying a more adventurous & attractive football, better game plan ,and a wee bit more adventurous offensive mentality.

Queiroz “”The team does not require a revolution.”

One the eve of Team Melli friendly match against South Korea, Queiroz gave a brief statement to the press and answered some questions.

One of the important statements of the Portuguese coach , which is also a surprise is that he will have nothing to do with the Omid Team which will soon be under the responsibility of the Croat coach Zlatko Kranjcar. This is quite contradictory to what Kaffashian said after the embarrassing defeats in the Asian Games which resulted in Iran’s elimination at the group stages. Kaffashian said , from now on, the Team Melli coach will take much active role in Omid team.

According to Mehr News Agency, Carlos Queiroz said that everything is fine with the team and they are ready to play for South Korea. “To play against some strong opposition is a scarce opportunity for us . I hope we play well, not only as a preparation match but to give our young players the opportunity to play.” Queiroz said.

Asked whether he will have a surprise and include the young players in the line up, Queiroz said “will have to play the young players at some stage. We do not have many friendly games lined up and this one is the only one so far so we might as well use them. After the World Cup ,  we needed to embark in building a new young team (…)  Because there are not many opportunities for friendly matches , their playing chances will be at the earliest opportunity .” referring to the young players.

National coach said: I’m sure players like him Pouraliganji,  Ehsan Haj Safi, Sardar Azmoun , Jahanbakhsh will form the backbone of the future team.

On the question of the plan for re-building , Queiroz said that “we  will continue re-building the team and start depending on the youngsters , however Team Melli does not need a revolution now, we will re-build at our own pace ”

About whether the process will follow the national team after the Asian Cup seriously or not, he said,  “The team does not require a revolution. You need to keep the core team and they take that work forward. Players who are older should be good models for young people.”

Candidates short-listed for Team Melli Youth team coach.

Tehran.

According to the Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA), FFIRI has named six candidates for coaching of the youth team. The candidates were selected based on criteria established by the Technical Committee.

The coaches are as follows:

  1. Muhammad Ahmadzadeh
  2. Hamid Alidousti
  3. AmirHossein Peyrovani
  4. Akbar Mohammadi
  5. Khodadad Azizi
  6. Rasool Zafarian

These individuals were selected from an initial list of 40 football coaches.

The requirement for the job included, coaching degree level A, a minimum of 4 years’ experience as a coach at youth teams level , good character reference , good technical knowledge ,  technical reputation, ethics and management capabilities, etc..

The requirement set is ideally suited for one Akbar Mohammadi , a name that seems to be repeatedly mentioned in any coaching job at youth level. Incumbent Akbar Mohammadi has trained Iran’s youth team but not to a great success. He was severely criticized after several failures and his selection as a head coach for Team Melli youth teams was put under question due to his low experience.

Mohammad Ahmadzadeh the most experienced candidates on the list was contacted by ISNA to comment about the job. The ex-Malavan Anzali coach, who also worked as an assistant coach at Team Melli Youth levels, said that about 20 days ago I was contacted by the Federation on the subject matter, but it was informal and not serious. They did not even ask me for a program or plan!.

On the contrary, Akbar Mohammadi who had the same call from FFIRI was asked to provide a long term plan for the youth team, as Mohammadi personally confirmed to ISNA.

AmirHossein Peyrovani could not be reached as he is presently abroad.

According to ISNA the candidates for the youth team coach, will most likely be given interviews this week, probably on Tuesday to explain and provide their plans to the Federation’s Technical Committee.

It is interesting how Khodadad Azizi, the outspoken critic of the hierarchy of football in Iran and a fiery character whose violence against a journalist was widely publicized a few years back, managed to pass the ethics & good character reference criteria set by the federation.

Zlatko Kranjcar on the brink of signing for Omid Team

Jafar Kashani , the Manager of Iran’s Omid team (Olympics) has announced that his federation and Zlatko Kranjcar are on the brink of signing a contract for the appointment of the Croat , formerly Persepolis and Sepahan coach , as the head coach of Iran’s Olympic team.

“I am very confident that it is a matter of days for the final contract to be signed. From my side, I am fully satisfied with the outcome of the negotiation and quite pleased by the way that Kranjcar has negotiated the contract with us. He is a professional man, with high degree of integrity and values. He is not the opportunist type who negotiates even the minutest of detail regarding money or payments. Kranjcar has declared that if he fails to take Iran to the Olympics, he will resign his job with expecting any compensation or severance pay.”

Kranjcar watch Omid Team in Qatar alongside Kashani

Kashani and Kranjcar met in Doha where the Omid team is setting camp. Kashani concluded that “as far as I am concerned it is a done deal; however, I am not the only person in the federation. The process needs to go through the right channels before it is finalized, sealed and delivered.”

Kashani refused to disclose the financial deal but said it is not very far from what Vingada was getting. The proposed contract will be for 21 months until the Rio Olympics.

“Omid Team “, translated into English  means “Hope Team”. It refers to the Olympic or the U23 team.

Korea coach “We are not here for any revenge.”

Uli Stielike, the Head Coach of South Korea , dismissed any notions of a revenge match ahead of the friendly in 100.000 capacity Azadi stadium on Tuesday.

“After our win in Jordan , we are here in Iran to continue our preparation for the Asian Cup and hopefully play a strong match .”

“I have a pretty good idea about Iran’s team and as one of the qualified teams to the World Cup , I watched their matches and can say that they played well and were at a high standard. I think we will see a good match on Tuesday”

“We have no thoughts of revenge or anything like that in our mind. We simply want to play a good game against a tough opposition who are themselves, candidates for the AFC Asian Cup title.”

“I have heard quite a bit about the atmosphere in Azadi stadium with their vociferous crowds and would like to taste it firsthand. I hope we get good many numbers of fans in Azadi.”

Ulrich ‘Uli’ Stielike, who started his coaching career as the head coach of the Switzerland national football team from 1989 to 1991, trained several teams before joining South Korea on 5th September 2014

As a player, the German defender won the European Championship in 1980 and was a runner-up in the 82 World Cup.

Iran and South Korea have met each other in the last 4 editions of AFC Asian Cup in the Quarterfinals stage. Last time Iran defeated South Korea in the AFC Asian Cup goes back to 2004, when the wonders of Ali Karimi with his hat trick eliminated the South Koreans from the competition.

Iran futsal loses to Colombia in Grand Prix 2014

Futsal Team Melli wasted a great chance of reaching the final of the 2014 Futsal Grand Prix in Brazil when they lost a tight match 3-4 to Colombia earlier today.

An elementary defensive mistake led the Colombians robbing the ball from Iran’s defense for Toro to put Colombia ahead 1-0. Hassanzadeh then equalized for Iran with a brilliant effort to make it 1-1.

Acosta restored Colombia’s lead courtesy of some good work on the right flank with the Colombian player skillfully dribbling past his marker and sending a diagonal ball for Acosta to score with an acute angle.

The first half finished 2-1 for Colombia.

The South Americans quickly scored in the second half with Iran’s defense really found wanting with Yeffri easily passing his marker and scoring past Samimi much like the second goal.

It was 3-1 for Colombia and a shock went through Team Melli system

Iran bounced back quite instantly. From the kick off after the Colombian goal, Tavakoli scored from an excellent assist by Hassanzadeh to make it. 3-2. Tavokali’s goal increase inspired Iran who took the game from the Colombians.

Hassanzadeh turned from provider to scorer on a role reversal from the previous goal. Tavokali took a corner kick which the Colombian keeper could only parry with his palm for Hassanzadeh to meet it and smash the equalizer from close range. The match was tied at 3-3 and it was in balance.

Then one of the weirdest of goals seals the match.

Colombian keeper kicked a ball towards Iran’s empty goal, but the goal hit the post to ricochet for Yeffri who raced towards Iran’s goal  to smash home the winner for Colombia.

It was a tight and exciting match, with the Colombians fully deserving the victory. Team Melli’s shortcoming was the feeble marking with two of the goals scored by the Latin Americans were because of poor marking and players being easily dribbled.

Iran will now meet Guatemala for the 3rd place play off. In the Group Match , Iran defeated Guatemala 7-2.

Brazil will meet Colombia in the final , a repeat of their group 1 match which ended 4-0 to the host.
