New faces in the latest Team Melli squad heading to South Africa.

The football federation announced the list of 23 players selected for Team Melli Training camp in South Africa.

There are 9 uncapped players in the list which has none except one of the legionnaires named. Most players are not  able to join until the AFC Asian Cup 2015 in Mid January . Sardar Azmoun will be the only player who will attend the camp as the Russian league will be in its winter break. Sajjad Shahabzadeh , the prolific Esteghlal forward who has an excellent scoring record this season, has been included and so is Iman Mobali , the Naft Tehran midfielder who is a key player for the league leader Naft Tehran.

Once again , there is no place for Mohammadreza Khalatbary , arguably , the best forward of the league this current season  while Mohsen Mosalman who has just joined Esteghlal on loan from Zob Ahan has failed to make the list.

Mohsen Mosalman joins Esteghlal.

The much travelled young midfielder and former Captain of Omid Team , has joined Esteghlal Tehran. Mohsen Mosalman has been sent on loan to Esteghlal as part of a deal between Zob Ahan and the Tehrani club starting from immediate effect.

The 24 years old Mosalman, was considered one of the bright prospects of Iranian football with exceptional and creative skills in the midfield. He played for Iran at several age levels team including the Olympic team. Moslaman , has not reached his potential and some observers believe that he is a wasted talent because of many issues some of it which are off field. He was called to Team Melli several times but only played 3 matches as substitute. He has one goal for Team Melli to his credit.

It was rumored that Andranik Teymourian , Esteghlal and Team Melli midfield player, will be part of the exchange deal , but Ando has refused a transfer to Zob Ahan of Esfahan.

A disgraceful act by the Ministry of sport official.

Humiliation and indignation of a person in public, is considered an offense punishable by law in every country of the world including Iran which has a strict law against such misdemeanor.

Last night on one of the most popular TV shows in Iran , a Ministry of Youth and sport official who was contacted by phone by Adel Ferdowsipour, the presenter of Navad, to explain the reasons behind the rejection of Zlatko Kranjcar as the Head Coach of Omid team , stated that his Ministry has rejected the Croat coach , not based on technical merits but on cultural issues because the Croat is an Alcoholic!

When challenged by the presenter if there are any evidences of such claims and whether it has been verified by a law force, Police or the judicial system, the Ministry of sports official responded that they have enough evidence against him although he was not prosecuted nor accused of any wrongdoing by a law force!

This public accusation in front of millions of viewers carried out without giving the accused person the right to defend himself , which is a basic human right,  amount to defamation and invasions of privacy. It is also a prosecution and public trial by the Ministry official who has neither legal authority nor the jurisdictions to conduct a trial.

What makes the matter even worse and certainly shameful, is that the Ministry of Youth and Sport has been asking for calm and serenity while advising the media and sport personalities not to engage in public quarrels and accusations, at the time when both the Minister and his deputy , and now this official is doing exactly the opposite of what they preach and claim.

In some civil law jurisdictions, defamation is treated as a crime rather than a civil wrongdoing.  Recently , Mayeli-Kohan was jailed for such violations and slanders , which was a strong message to anyone who dares to wrongly accuse others without evidence. Will this official be put on trial or will the government use its veto to cover his wrongdoing?

How long will the pragmatic and progressive President Rouhani , tolerate the Minster of Youth and Sports and his men, notorious for their meddling, agitations and public hostility with the football federation,  is another question that is beginning to be asked by many observers.

A president who was elected on a campaign that promised free expression , respect for people privacy and  letter of law must surely be embarrassed and concerned by the antics of the Ministry of Youth and Sport which has put the name of football in Iran in disrepute, according to Mehr News agency.

What is government interference in football ?

With the on-going interferences by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the working of FFIRI , the fate of football in Iran is being put in jeopardy and sanction. FIFA has a strict principle on the independence of football round the globe. In this 2011 FIFA article , much light has been shed on the term and the explanations provided by FIFA officials on the subject matter

On Wednesday, FIFA’s Association Committee will gather for their regular meeting in Zurich. The Committee deals with relations between FIFA and its members with a view of achieving optimum co-operation. If governments try to interfere in the running of associations, FIFA will intervene.

FIFA.com spoke with FIFA’s Director of Member Associations and Development, Thierry Regenass, about governmental interference in football and the measures which football’s governing body can take.

FIFA.com: What exactly is political interference?
Thierry Regenass:
FIFA has the mandate to control association football worldwide, in all its aspects. This mandate is delegated to the national association, to control association football at the national level. This is about managing, controlling and developing football as a game and also the organisation of the game in general. The associations have the obligation to do it on their own, in an autonomous way without outside interference, from the government or any other parties. In general, political interference is when a government tries to take direct control.

What is the most common political interference?
The most common case of political interference is when a government perceives that the Executive Committee of the national association is not performing well enough and decides to take action. Often, because the national team is losing too many games, they decide that changes must be made and want to put someone else in charge. Other than that, it can be a lot of different things. For example, a government organising its own competition, outside of the association, or a government which decides to change the result of a league, because they favour one team more than the other.

However, we are not against governments, nor do we encourage our member associations to work in opposition of their governments. On the contrary – we constantly try to establish a good atmosphere and co-operation with governments. A government has a very important role to play in contributing to the development of football in a country. If there is a good relationship between the government and the national football association, then there will be very productive results.

How many cases of interference, more or less, does FIFA have to deal with in a year?
It’s difficult to give a figure. It all depends on what you call a ‘case’. We are in constant communication with our members and at times, there might be confusion, or even tension with other parties, but it can’t even be considered a case because the issue gets quickly resolved, through a simple clarification letter, or sometimes the evocation of a suspension.

When there are problems, we try to encourage the association to explain the background, we then explain why there would be a problem for FIFA, and then encourage the association to restore good working relations bilaterally.

Sometimes we meet with government representatives to try to prevent them from interfering. We only get involved when there has been a direct intervention. In that case, the matter would be referred to the FIFA Executive Committee or the Emergency Committee, with the ultimate sanction being the suspension of the association. If the association is still suspended by the time of the Congress, it needs to be confirmed by the FIFA Congress.

So talking about figures, it can be between four to ten ‘cases’ per year. Currently no associations are suspended.

FIFA is a strong organisation, not only in its football realm, but also in the political, socio-economical world, and we can and should use this strength to help our members.

Thierry Regenass, FIFA Director of Member Associations and Development

How does FIFA detect political interference?
In general, the association informs us. But in some places, they don’t want to inform us because they fear suspension or they are afraid of their Government. As football’s governing body we are constantly in the process of monitoring the situation of football in the world, including political topics. So we might hear from other football stakeholders, be it from the political world, the football world, or the local media even. The next step would be to ask the association to report about the issue and FIFA would then send delegates to examine the situation.

What are the measures that FIFA can take to stop political interference?
Although we have strong principles as well as procedures to follow, we have to act on a case-by-case basis. In terms of concrete measures, we do not have many alternatives other than the threat of suspension, and the suspension itself. But when you suspend an association, hence withdrawing financial resources, you penalise the football association, without impacting or engaging the government that much. So our first step is to try and encourage the association to get in contact with the government or the party involved in the case, and discuss the issue. Through official communications we will then progressively inform of the mounting risk of a suspension of the national association.

But outside of the context of a case, through monitoring, communication and reactivity, FIFA can try to prevent the emergence of a crisis. FIFA is a strong organisation, not only in its football realm, but also in the political, socio-economical world, and we can and should use this strength to help our members.

With which organisations is FIFA working closely together to achieve the goal of keeping politics out of sport/football?
First of all, we work with the continental confederations. In some countries, there are more general problems, i.e. governments enacting laws that will apply to, and impact on all sports, for example taking away the management responsibilities from the federation, and handing it over to the government. In that example, we are in contact with the IOC and the IOC is usually co-ordinating, as it represents all the sports.

How does FIFA monitor or ensure that an association in a non-democratic regime is not affected by political interference?
The congress has decided that all associations should conform to the FIFA Statutes. It’s an ongoing process where associations are reforming their statutes, including associations of non-democratic countries. Of course not all of them have gone through this yet. In some places it’s faster than others. Now more than half of the associations have gone through this change, but it’s a step-by-step process. The FIFA Standard Statutes should ensure among many things, that there is a democratic way of electing the office term bearer of the association.

Are there examples where the situation in a country has significantly improved through FIFA’s intervention?
Yes, there are a few. In Ethiopia, for example, there had been a problem for a long time and they were suspended for a while. In the end, we managed to find a way out of the crisis together with the government and the association. After that, the co-operation has been very good with the government. We are doing a lot to help them develop football.

The other case has been Brunei Darussalam. The association had been de-registered by the government, which wanted another organisation to control football. This led to a long suspension between September 2009 and May 2011. But now, the association is re-registered and stable and we are now able to focus together on football development – which is actually FIFA’s No1 objective according to its statutes.

Habib Kashani quits as Omid Team Manager in protest.

Habib Kashani the former CEO of Persepolis club and the Manager of Omid Team has quit his job.

On his appointment for the highly demanding job after the Asian Games debacle, Kashani was in action quite quickly and managed to secure the services of Zlatko Kranjcar to coach the Omid team with the aim of taking the U23 team for the Olympics in Rio for the first time in 40 years. After completing all selection processes and formalities  Ali Kaffashian announced the news to the press that Kranjcar has been selected and approved by the federation’s Football Development & Technical Committee. However, only a day later Kaffashian suddenly had a change of heart. He claimed that there is one more filter to go through before signing the contract.

That filter was none other than the Ministry of Youth and Sports ,  notorious for interferences in the work of football federation. The Ministry has previously been a strong opponent of Queiroz contract extension and now it appears that Kranjcar is not a suitable coach for the Omid team, according to their own football expertise panel . The Ministry keeps denying direct involvement, but both the Minister Goudarzi and his deputy Sajjadi have been vocal and consistent in their ongoing interferences on the pretext of providing advice, read order, to the football federation. Such interferences are in direct violation of FIFA

Kashani has issued a long emotional public letter on  his resignation. He stated that he was not in need of or pursuing a job but was pursued by the federation for such a critical mission. With a 40 years absence being a black mark in Iran football heritage, Kashani had a national mission to answer, according to his letter.

“Although I believe that all the three organizations involved in the Omid Team, the FFIRI , The Ministry of youth and Sport and Iran Olympic Committee IOC,  are sincerely and diligently working towards the success of the team top break this 40 years absence, I correspondingly believe that the establishment of a Technical Committee in the Ministry of Youth and Sport that can over-rule the football federation , is a direct violation of the football law and interference in the running of an independent NGO. However , I still respect that committee’s decision if it was based on technicality and/or genuine valid reason.”

“Instead, an international coach with a pedigree and a resume of success in Iran and oversees is rejected based on non-footballing issues. This is totally unacceptable.”

“I still want to be a soldier and a servant for this country and in this respect, I shall resign my job to allow a suitable candidate who is capable of working with the trio of organization to achieve its goal of qualifying to the Rio Olympics Games.”

Asghar Hassanzadeh wins Futsal player of the Year Award.

The Asian Futsal Confederation has named Iran’s Ali-Asghar Hassanzadeh as the best player of 2014, per a letter the AFC sent to Iran Football Federation secretary-general.

Ali Asghar Hassanzadeh Futsal Team Melli Captain is currently playing for the Russian Club Norilsky Nikel .

Hassanzadeh was the only Iranian who has won any type of awards in the annual ceremony of AFC held in Manila. The controversial award ceremony, especially for the Asian player of the year, has been ridiculed by many experts and critics as not representative of Asian player’s standard and being politically motivated . No name and hardly known players win the awards while the best Asian players playing at the top leagues of the world are ignored.

This year’s winner is a Saudi Arabian player by the name of Nasser Al Shamrani. This player has won the award despite 8 match ban imposed on him by the AFC Disciplinary Committee for spitting on an Australian player during this years AFC Champions League finals. Thus the AFC is sending the wrong message and shooting itself in the foot by selecting such a player!

The award was based on AFC attributing the superb and impressive show of Hassanzadeh in the AFC Futsal Championship 2014 and the eight goals he won in the games, made him known as the most valuable player of the continent.

The AFC says the prize for the best player of Asian Futsal will be sent to Iranian Football Federation in November.

Ali Daei and Homayoun Behzadi inducted in Asian Hall of Fame.

Ali Daei and Homayoun Behzadi , two of Iran’s greatest footballers , along with former South Korean defender and coach Hong Myung-bo  and ex-Australian international Harry Kewell were among the first 10 players to be inducted into the Asian Football Confederations’ Hall of Fame.

Former Bayern Munich striker Daei played 149 times for Iran and scored over 100 goals for his country, while Behzadi who played in the sixties and the seventies was regarded as the best forward Iran has produced and all round multi-talented player.

Daei is still the world record holder for the highest number of goals scored at international level.

Harry Kewell, who was voted Australia’s greatest ever player, was inducted despite many of his best years coming before the Socceroos were permitted to join the AFC in 2006.

Hong, frequently labelled Asia’s best defender, captained the Koreans to a fourth place finish at their home World Cup in 2002, one of four finals in which he played at, as he racked up 136 caps.

He had a less enjoyable experience at the World Cup earlier this year as head coach when the team bowed out at the group phase with only one point and he soon quit the post.

The trio were named alongside Soh Chin Aun of Malaysia, Japan’s Yasuhiko Okudera, Saudi Arabia’s Sami Al Jaber and Indian Baichung Bhutia in the inaugural list.

China’s Sun Wen, who scored 106 goals in 152 appearances for her country, and Japan’s World Cup winning skipper Homare Sawa were the two women named among the 10.

Kranjčar ultimatum to FFIRI

The Croat coach has given Ali Kaffashian and the football federation up to this weekend to decide on his  approval and appointment as the head coach of Omid Team (U23) else he will be responding to other offers. Peykan is the prime candidate for the services of the Zlatko Kranjčar and has been quite active in pursuing him following the sacking of their coach, Mansour Ebrahimzadeh last week.

Kranjčar was all set to join the FFIRI as a coach with approvals granted internally with in the federation administrations including the president himself. However, a telephone call from the Ministry of Youth and Sport put a halt to all that. A day after Kaffashian confirmed to the press that Kranjcar is appointed he retreated and changed his wording by claiming that there are a few pending issues!

It is not clear what objection the Ministry has against Kranjcar appointment. Although the international football laws of FIFA prohibits government interference in football and has already sanctioned Iran for doing so right after the World Cup 2006, such meddling and imposition is quite common under the table and behind closed doors. With a submissive and compliant management at the helm of FFIRI, the decision making process of the federation must seek the blessing and approval of the Minister before implementation, else the wrath of the Ministry.

Mahmoud Goudarzai , the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Despite the on-going denials of the Ministry and its legal arm, it is a common knowledge that Minister , Mahmoud Goudarzi was instrumental in delaying the finalization of Queiroz contact until the 11th hours. The Minster of Youth and Sports has been quite active in manipulating managerial and coaching position in its two prize assets, Persepolis and Esteghlal which are authoritatively, wholly owned by the government.

Mahmoud Goudarzi , a former wrestler, was the fourth candidate that was suggested by President Hassan Rouhani to the Parliament for approval as Minister of Youth and Sport. 3 previous candidates of  the President were rejected by the parliament. Iran is the only Middle East country that has such a democratic system.  Mahmoud Goudarzi won the approval by a small margin.

Barazay “Kranjcar is the perfect coach for Omid Team”

The Captain of Team Melli U-23 , known as the Omid Team , has spoken to ISNA about the aspirations and the prospects of the team.

Behnam Barazay , the current Rah Ahan player and the Captain of the U23 team , believes in strong preparation games ” unless we play against quality teams for our friendly games to get the big experience , I am afraid we will not be able to qualify for the Olympic Games.”

The young striker , is also confident that the Croat coach Zlatko Kranjcar is the best candidate for the Omid team ” He has coached at different levels, his record is quite good , he coached in Iran and his approach is professional. I believe he is the perfect coach for Omid Team.”

“Although many players prefer to work with Iranian coaches, and I am one of those players , as communication is easier , however a coach in the class of Kranjcar can make a big difference.” Barazay added.

Regarding the recent failures specifically in the Asian Games in Incheon, Barazay said ” The players were under tremendous stress after the Asian Games. In the Qatar camp , quite a lot of work was done on the psychological aspect but fear of losing still causes a lot of stress.”

About his own future career and whether he will follow his teammates Alireza Jahanbaksh and Sardar Azamoun in to Europe,  Barazay Did not want to think about that for the time being although he received an offer from an Arab team. ” All my concentration right now is on the form of my team Rah Ahan. I have  not succeeded in gaining the full confidence of Hamid Estili yet. My goal is to do that. I need to get it right here in Iran before thinking about abroad and becoming a legionnaires”

The situation with the appointment of Kranjcar took another weird twist when it was decided that a committee within the football federation will have to examine the Croat coach resume and give its seal of approval before the coach can be appointed. This development cam up aright after Ali Kaffashian and Habib Kashani confirmed the appointment of the ex-Sepahan Esfahan coach as the head coach of the Omid Team. Many observers are suspecting some interference by the Ministry of Sport who always claims that they have no role in appointing coaches for National Team , but in reality they exert pressure on the FFIRI and Kaffashian to pass their own candidates.
