5 Bosnia players to watch at World Cup

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — With an attack-minded coach and a world-class striker leading the way, Bosnia is looking to score plenty of goals at the World Cup.

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko scored most of the team’s goals in qualifying, and coach Safet Susic will be looking for plenty more when the team gets to Brazil to face Argentina, Iran and Nigeria in Group F.

A creative midfield run by Miralem Pjanic will help, too.

Here are five Bosnia players to watch:

———

EDIN DZEKO

EDIN-DZEKO

While playing a major role in Manchester City’s Premier League-winning campaign, Edin Dzeko also managed to score 10 of Bosnia’s 30 goals in World Cup qualifying.

Dzeko, nicknamed “the Diamond” in Bosnia, has scored 26 goals in 49 international matches and will be the key man up front in an attack-minded lineup.

———

MIRALEM PJANIC

PjanicRoma attacking midfielder Miralem Pjanic provides flair in the Bosnia midfield.

Pjanic started his international career in Luxembourg following his family’s move to the country shortly before the outbreak of the war in Bosnia in 1991.

He had to wait two years to get permission to play for Bosnia, making his debut in 2008. He has scored eight goals in 46 appearances for Bosnia.

———

VEDAD IBISEVIC

VEDAD-IBISEVICVedad Ibisevic’s strike gave Bosnia a 1-0 win over Lithuania in Kaunas to assure his team of World Cup qualification.

The Stuttgart forward has also played club football in Switzerland, the United States and France.

In 2008, Ibisevic was awarded the “National Idol” award as Bosnian footballer of the year.

He has scored 20 goals in 51 appearances for Bosnia.

———

ASMIR BEGOVIC

ASMIR-BEGOVICStoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is considered among the top netminders in the English Premier League.

Begovic, who left Bosnia when he was 4, conceded only six goals in 10 qualifying matches for Bosnia.

He opted to play for Bosnia ahead of Canada, the side with which he started his international youth career in 2004.

———

ZVJEZDAN MISIMOVIC

ZVJEZDAN-MISIMOVICMidfielder Zvjezdan Misimovic leads Bosnia with 80 international appearances, and has scored 26 goals.

Playing for Wolfsburg and winning the Bundesliga in 2009, Misimovic led the league with 20 assists.

Misimovic currently plays for Chinese club Guizhou Renhe.

Team Melli chances in World Cup 2014

After 3 matches in Europe in addition to the Guinea match in Tehran, the picture is quite clear on where Team Melli stands in regard to its chances, the strategy and game plans that Queiroz will deploy in Brazil.

It is almost certain that Queiroz strategy will be based on defense. Tight defenses, even down to parking the bus, tight marking, defending from deep and dependence on counter-attack to score a goal or two.

“We shall not concede” is the war cry for Queiroz to his players.

Who is the no 1 goalkeeper?

Since Mehdi Rahmati left Team Melli on his own accordRahman Ahmadi, many feared a gap developing at a critical time of the qualifiers. Rahman Ahmadi answered the call and in fact, did very well to become one of the key players who guided Team Melli to the finals of the World Cup. There will be two more keepers in the team beside Ahmadi, but none of them can be compared to the Sepahan keeper.   Daniel Davari short stint with the team has been nothing but embarrassment conceding goals that no goalkeeper at this level should concede. The latest was the very soft goal against Angola where he was a spectator when the ball was headed in the net. Sousha Makani has not featured much in the team but at club level he has been both brilliant and a calamity. Haghighi’s standard is really unknown since very few people in Iran have seen him play en force.

The quality of defense

Celebrating Hosseini goal, Shojaei, Nekounam & MahiniDefensive strategy is hardly a pretty thing to watch and for the perfectionist, it’s a game killer. Realistically speaking though, Queiroz can only play with the cards on hands and what players he has, seems to fit his plans well. With number of solid defenders in Hosseini , Sadeghi or Montazeri , Heydari , Pooladi or Beikzadeh and a strong goalkeeper in Ahmadi at the back It seems that this line can do the job well. With Nekounam and Teymourian admirably doing the defensive midfield work, Team Melli can be pretty assured of possessing a quality defensive system.  On paper, Iran has a reliable defense capable of holding the onslaught that the opposing teams might deploy on them. Although It is doubtful if any of the 3 teams will use an all-out attack game plan on Iran, not unless they are a gambling lot.

The midfield Dynamos.

Ashkan+Dejagah+Thailand+v+Iran+ryt8sxka6Ycl  The most senior, high profile or experiences Team Melli players in the squad are mostly the midfield Players. The Captain Javad Nekounam , with 142 caps and 37 goals in his 14 years of Team Melli service, Andranik Teymourian, 78 Caps and 9 goals form the core of the Midfield holding (defensive) system but very well capable of attack and shooting from long range.  Haghighi and Haddadifar are also capable backups in case they are required. Nekounam and Teymourian have a good understanding of each others role as they have been playing beside each others for years. In attacking sense, Ashkan Dejagah and Masoud Shojaei will be carrying out the duties on the flanks while several other options are available for Queiroz to enhance these two depending on the type of plan he has in mind. Khalatbary , Hajsafy and Rahmani are fine option when needed.

for Team  Melli, Ashkan Dejagah has been a true revelation since he made his debut in Oct 2012. He has added quality, finesses and class in the midfield. His scoring record is not bad either with 4 goals in 13 games. He can be the player that may very well make the difference. The same cannot be said about Masoud Shojaei though. After a long term lay off due to a series of injuries and operations, Masoud never seemed to fully recover to return back to his old level. Target of boo boys in Azadi , The midfielder has not convinced many critics that he is a regular starter for Team Melli. However , as seen in the practice matches, Masoud has still some magic left in his legs which can benefit the team.

How good are the forwards?

The answer is that they are good enough; however, like any expert will tell you, the effectiveness of the forwards is greatly dependent on the overall plan of the team.

Who can score for Team Melli?

Nowhere, in the 4 matches played, was there anKArim Ansarifardy sign of potent offensive strategy, although Team Melli has the potential to inflict damage to any of the teams in the group with the players in hand. Ashkan Dejagah coming from behind the lone forward can be effective and score goals.  His individual skills, explosive runs, accurate and powerful shooting are all attributes that augurs well for the Midfielder cum winger that helped him score many goals in his career. In the central forward position, be it Ghoochannejad or Ansarifard in the lone striker role, both the players have a proven record of prolific scoring. In case these two players fall short, Queiroz has the chance to introduce the yet unproven qualities of Jahanbakhsh or Azmoun. Both these youngsters lack any experience at top level, but their youthful energy and audacious tactics, can possibly yield some results. Their lack of experience could be an advantage in situations where senior players shy away from making some moves, but the younger ones would give it a go.

Further back Teymourian and Nekounam despite being the holding (Defensive) midfield players, both have lethal long range shooting ability and both have scored spectacular goals. Nekounam’s scoring record for Team Melli is a source of pride. The only doubt in the scoring department is Masoud Shojaei. Not known for his scoring skills, he has been pretty average and hardly replicated his earlier career moves and dazzling displays.  Shojaei’s chances of scoring based on his record and performance of late, is pretty remote.

Defenders of Team Melli have also shown some remarkable scoring record. In fact both the two goals scored in the last of Iran’s World Cup in 2006 were scored by defenders, Golmohammady and Bakhtiyarizadeh.

There used to be a prolific scoring pair in Team Melli, but not in the forward line. Aghli and Hosseini , at one stage , scored more goals than the forwards did in Team Melli. Aghili is no more there but Hosseini is still there doing a sterling role in the central defense and also quite a good job at set pieces. Hosseini is a definite favorite to score and will be targeted by his teammate especially at corners. To replace Aghili’s scoring ability, Team Melli still has a defender who is very well capable of scoring with his explosive headers. He is Amir Hossein Sadeghi.

 Any surprises?

Football is a strange game. Mostly predictable but sometimes it does not run according to the script. Perhaps the Portugal North Korea’s match is still fresh in the minds of many World Cup fans where the Asian representative was blown apart by 6 goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates in 2010. Further back, it is also difficult to forget the humiliation that Germany inflicted upon a lackluster and pathetic Saudi Arabian team in World Cup 2002 by 8 goals with mercy.  Team Melli falling apart in this manner is highly unlikely. The strong mindset and character of Iranians is one shield against such occurrence. The fighting spirit of the Persians is a trademark and Team Melli has proudly replicated the spirits at many stages, especially when they were in challenging situations.

Team Melli draws with Angola.

Team Melli drew with Angola 1-1 in an eventful match in Hartberg stadium. Angola scored late in the first half by Silva, while Ansarifard broke the deadlock for Team Melli with his goal in the 56th minute. Like the previous match played against Montenegro , the small stadium was filled with loyal Team Melli fans coming from all across Austria and neighboring countries to cheer the Team.

Both teams started the match with what looked like a 2nd string teams as they were involved in matches few days back. That forced both coaches to use other players . Team Melli had Nekounam and Ghoochannejad playing from the previous match.

The African team started the match with some pretty rough tackling similar to the expected style of coarse treatment that team Melli will be receiving with Nigeria. However , that rough handling was quite costly for Team Melli. As early as 23rd minute , Both Javad Nekounam and Sardar Azmoun had to leave the field due to injury.

The first real threat from Iran came in the 12th minute, Ansarifard headed wide off the crossbar from a neat Hajsafy’s free kick.

The match continued in an uneven rhythm with some wild tackles and lots of inaccurate passes by both teams.

In 36th minute Reza Haghighi heads weakly into the arms from Hajsafy Free Kick

Much of Team Melli Offensive moves were paltry and disorganized with players finding difficulties in finding each other . Poor passing , was prominent while there was not a single shoot at the Angolan Keeper.

The only line that has the confidence of the fans to perform well is in the World Cup is the defense line. That tight defense, however crumbled like a house cards with astonishing ease on the first and only serious attack by Angola. In the 4ast minute Angola wins a corner on the right some 40 meters out. The free kick taken by Gilberto is sent deep inside Iran’s box where Silva met it and had the easiest of tasks to head into the net unchallenged by any Team Melli defenders, Davari was a spectator , just watching the ball goes past him! The goalkeeper made no attempt at all to save the ball , while his positioning and ball watching was pathetic.

A few minutes later , The referee blew for half time in a what was a disappointing performance by the standard of the second string Team Melli team. The exception was Ashkan Dejagah who continued to display a high standard of football and played well up to expectation. The rest came out short.

The second half started with Bakhtiyar Rahmani coming in, The foolad Captain’s impact was immediate as he energized the attack.

In the 48th minute, at last the Iranian fans see the ball end up in the net by Rahmani but was disallowed by the referee due to a foul by Bakhtiyar on Angola defender,

Minute 49 Reza Haghighi lifts his foot so high while jumping which resulting in two victims. The worst off being His own teammate Ansarifard.

While Team Melli has more of the ball , the last pass was poor and the promising moves failed to this inaccurate passing

ran’s Ehsan Hajsafi (left) challenges Angola’s Lunguinha during a friendly in Hartberg, Austria.

Minute 56: Karim Ansarifard scores the equalizer and breaks the deadlock after 263 minutes, but it was a goal worth waiting for. Hajsafy beautiful y controls a cross on his chest from over 30 meters sent by Haghighi, The Team Melli new captain (after Nekounam left the field) , then easily passes his marker and diagonally send s a ball to the on rushing Ansarifard. Karim with his exceptional skill of half turn and shoot, does exactly that and blasts the ball into Angola’s net ,

Iran was looking the much better team while Angolans had little to offer but some rough tackling.

Minute 64: Ghoochannejad on the right passes his marker but his shot is intercepted by the keeper for a corner.

Minute 72 Ghoochannejad wastes a perfect opportunity to score and put Iran ahead. The central forward receives a ball from a cross. Unchallenged from no more than two meters, he only had the goalkeeper to beat, but poorly places the ball in the welcoming arms of Angola goalkeeper

For a striker like Ghoochannejad who scores on half chances, that was a regretful miss.

In the dying minutes, the referee blows for a foul on Angola keeper just inside the box. The subsequent indirect free kick is taken by Ale Nemeh who thunderous shots hits the Angola wall for a corner.

The referee not only did not account for any injury or wasted time due to substitution and game delays, he actually blew the final whistle 15 seconds before the regulation time! Obviously he was not enjoying the match as the fans in the stands.

The final result of 1-1 would probably satisfy both sets of coaches. Carlos has used and tested all the 28 players in these three matches. Montenegro was the toughest test which Iran should have wrapped up with a narrow win, but even this second string team Queiroz has used, would have given the Portuguese foods for thought as far as the final list composition.

The concern remains on the extent of Nekounam’s injury which did not look as bad as Azamoun’s. However , close medical examination will reveal the true level of injury.

Azamouns in the 20 minutes or so of this match showed some beautiful moves and it would be cruel if he misses the World Cup due to an injury.

Team Melli will fly to Tehran arriving at 3 Am on Saturday. They will next get together on Monday after spending some needed time with their families.

Teymourian: Playing against Iran won’t be easy

FIFA.com

“No game is going to be easy for us,” midfielder Andranik Teymourian said at a training camp in eastern Austria. “But playing against Iran is not going to be easy for any of our opponents.”

Iran start their fourth World Cup  against Argentina, Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group F. They have never made it past the first round and are widely predicted to struggle this time.

Iran won just one point at their last appearance – thanks to a draw against Angola – at Germany 2006. Their previous tournaments were in 1978 and 1998. They have a record of one win, two draws and six defeats from nine World Cup matches.

They head to Brazil, however, having topped their Asian qualifying group ahead of Korea Republic – a fact the players will not let anyone forget.

“This shows the enormous fighting spirit shown by the players, proven in the qualifiers, and the fact that we could qualify is an absolutely tremendous achievement for our team and I personally hope that we can be one of the favourites also,” said Teymourian.

NEC player Alireza Jahanbakhsh said: “That’s like a window for all the world, all the countries can see it, so we’re going to be our best and get a result in the World Cup.”

The first test will be against Nigeria on 16 June.

“I think it’s going to be a tough battle,” said defender Steven Beitashour, a 2012 MLS All-Star player, now with the Vancouver Whitecaps. “If you can start off the World Cup right and get the win, I think you have a good chance of getting to the next round.”

The Iranian goalkeeper had already decided in April to leave Brunswick. At that time, Davari, who was changed from 1 FSV Mainz 05 concord 2009, rejected an offer of Lower Saxony on an extension of his existing contract.

A winning start for Team Melli U-17

Team Melli U-17 defeated Kyrgyzstan 3-0 in the opening match of the Caspian Sea Youth Tournament in Azerbaijan.

Japan , Iran , Tajikistan , Kyrgyzstan , Turkey,  Kazakhstan , Bulgaria in addition to the host Azerbaijan are competing in the tournament.

Team Melli U-17 coached by Mostafa Ghanbarpour is playing the host nation on Friday. A win by Iran will qualify the team to the semi finals , while any other result will mean Iran’s qualification is dependent on the other teams’ results

Team Melli ready for Angola match.

Team Melli continued the training sessions for the final game in Austria against Angola.

Despite the light injury to 4 players, none of which are serious , Queiroz is expected to field a strong team while giving some last thoughts on the short list of players that he has to drop.

Team Melli and Angola last met in the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany. The result was a 1-1 draw in which Iran went behind and the equalizer was scored by the defender Sohrab Bakhtiyarizadeh fron a header following a corner kick.

That was the one and only time that Angola qualified for the World Cup. Angola has not been very active since their last match in the World Cup qualifiers against Liberia which they won 3-0. In 2014 they played 2 matches only drawing 1-1 with Mozambique in March  while defeating Morocco 2-0 a few days back in Portugal.  It was a confidence boosting win against the African Cup of Nations host in 2015 and a win that will enhance the chances of Romeu Filemon’s side  to qualify for the finals of African premiere competition.

Goals from Bastos and Yano secured victory, while debutant goalkeeper Signori Antonio was in imperious form at the other end to preserve a clean sheet.

Angola was quite impressive on the counter attack as their second goal was a classic  of this strategy. The Iranian defense shall have a good match with the fast and lively Angolan attack especially the new player Portuguese-born striker Fredy.

Another star player of the match against Morocco was their debutant goalkeeper Signori Antonio who was in imperious form at the other end to preserve a clean sheet for Angola. It remains to be seen if the Iranian forward can break their fast and score again the impressive  Signori Antonio.
Goals is what every fan of Team Melli is looking forward to in this match. regardless of the status of the match , failing to score in 3 matches in a row threatens to develop into a physiological hurdle for the players. In Iran history , only once the team did not manage to score for three consecutive matches at the time when Ebrahimzadeh was a caretaker coach of Team Melli.

Kaffashian “We will present the Brazil Ambassador with good quality Team Melli Jersey”

Ali Kaffashian said that they are honored by the Brazil Ambassador in Iran recent statement in his support for Team Melli. “We will present the Brazil Ambassador with good quality Team Melli Jersey”

Senor Santiago Irazabal Mourao, Brazilian ambassador to Tehran , who is a staunch supporter of Pele, Brazilian legend, said that he would support Iran against Argentine, Brazil’s traditional rival, by wearing Iran’s national soccer kit. It is not clear if Mourao will be at the match or watching the match on TV.

Kaffashian was speaking at a ceremony honoring two of the Iranian referees who are selected for the World Cup duties, Alireza Faghani and assistant referee Kamaranifar.

Alireza Faghani 3 IRN

“The Foreign Affairs Ministry has requested some jersey with players and coaching staff signature , which they wanted to giveaway at ceremonies in Brazil. We obliged and used the best quality jersey for that purpose and the same that we will provide his excellency the Brazil Ambassador” added Kaffashian in his usual sarcasm referring to the controversies around the quality of the official kit.

Kaffashian denied that his administration do not want Queiroz , in response to a journalist statement by Queiroz. “If we get the support and I mean the financial support to continue with Queiroz , he is the number one and only candidate we have for the coaching job of Team Melli. We simply cannot afford his new demands without some backing , else it will be too embarrassing and difficult for both sides trying to get the resources from here and there.” Kaffashian responded.

The head of FFIRI also referred to the meeting with the government including vice-President Nahavandi and Minister of sport Jahangiri regarding the financial difficulties of the federation and the budget deficit. Kaffashian uttered the customary statement “It was a fruitful meeting and they promised to help.:. Of course , that has been said more than a few times with the government yet to inject any funds into the federation’s budget. In fact , Jahangiri was ultra critical of football federations lavish expenditure and demanded that they tighten the belt.

on the rumors that Mohammad Dadkan will take over the Presidency of the Football Federation after the Wold Cup , Kaffashian responded “After the World Cup and for the next 20 months , I will be the President of the federation according to the rules. After that , there will be an election. Anybody wins the most vote , I will gladly hand over my post to him. Till then , I am the President.”

Kaffashian has already expressed his interest to run for another term…..Heaven help us all.

Latest injury list of Team Melli players.

Team Melli is preparing for the friendly game against Angola in TSV Hartberg Fußballstadion, Hartsburg tomorrow with a list of players with injury concerns.

Andranik Teymourian , Jalal Hosseini , Khosrow Heydari and Mehrdad Pooladi were all given a day off from the training after they sustained minor injuries in the Montenegro match. The tough tackling players from Montenegro also had another more serious victim in Hashim Beikzadeh whose destiny is still not clear.

It is not clear if any of the players on the injury list will be available for the Angola match. The match will be the last opportunity for Carlos Queiroz to finalize his 23 players list. Assuming that all the injured players are on the final list , Queiroz might opt to rest them or use them as substitutes.

The FFIRI website announced that the doctors examined Hashim Beikzadeh closely and determined that there is a very good chance that his injury can be cured by the start of the World Cup 18 days from now, however the left back will have to fly to Brazil ahead of the squad to receive some treatments at the hand of Brazilian specialist probably at Corinthians FC Medical Facility.

The rest of the players are all injury free and continued their regular training.Beikzadeh walking with Heydary

Iran Montenegro play a goaless draw.

Iran’s Team Melli drew 0-0 with Montenegro in TSV Stadion (Hartberg), Austria. The friendly match was the third for Team Melli and the second scoreless result in aa row which was repeat of the same result against Belarus.

The match saw Queiroz field his strongest side after the camp was completed with the arrival of European based players.
the gameplan of Queiroz was the familiar a 5-4-1 formation a plan which emphasizes strong and solid defense. In Earnest the plan worked well in both matches in Austria despite the modest form of the opposition.

Hashim Beikzadeh against Montenegro
Hashim Beikzadeh against Montenegro

Montenegro was never the serious opposition that Iran was  looking fir in this match where Iran was at full strength. Despite a number of their players playing in major European leagues , the team was no more than a run of the mill team which resorted to some rough tackling on occasion to compensate for their lack of running or skill.  There was only one realy scoring chances by this team during the match. In general Montenegro was quite disappointing and nothing ike the team that battled well against the likes of England , Ukraine and Poland in the World Cup qualifiers.

However , with the end of season , it is not very surprising that the players have lost their appetite and looking for a well earned rest while some enjoy watching the World Cup on TV.

The match saw the early withdrawal of Hashim Beikzadeh Team Melli’s left back, who limped of the field after quarter of an hour in pain. His facial expression and the concerned shown around him at the bench , was indicative of perhaps a serious re-occurrence of an old injury. The left back might not make the World Cup list, however his injury status will be  known and announced by the medical team after close inspection.

The match itself mostly played in the middle of the filed with little action at the goals. at a alter stage. Mladen Božović was the busier of the two goalkeepers but mostly picking easy balls or crosses. With Iran defense sitting comfortably , this allowed the right flank through Khosrow Heydari to go on his famous runs and send some good crosses. Backed by Askan Dejagah , the right side was the most effective and created a;most all the chances.

27th minute a free kick was one by Iran which Dejagah took. His powerful shot was superbly parried by Montenegro keeper Božović. 4 minutes later Shojae controlled a high ball and cleverly dribbled past his marker allowing himself a clear sight of the goal. His shot however , was so feeble and disappointing that Božović handled as if it was a back pass!

While Iran was solid defensively and hardly allowed the opposition any breathing space in both matches, the offensive line has left a lot to be desired.

The first half ended goalless.

Early in the second half , Central defender Montazeri had a good run and crossed accurately into the box. Nekounam intercepted and placed his header well to the left side of Božović who was left helpless, unfortunately the ball missed the target by inches.

on the hour , Queiroz introduced 3 young guns Hajsafy, Jahanbakhsh and Azmoun into the match to improve the running and the offensive front. This was Sardar Azmoun’s debut match. Despite their running and energy , the young players failed to penetrate the solid Montenegro defense.

on 65th minute Stevan Jovetić runs well passed several Iranian players and eventually is stopped by a foul  outside the box by Nekounam, who receives a yellow card for his effort. The Manchester City player decides to take the free kick himself but his effort is well wide and high of Ahmadi’s goal.

on 77th minute a lose ball is collected by Hajsafy who shoots on the volley but narrowly misses the low post.

Both Azmoun and Jahanbakhsh tried their luck , but none of their efforts seriously threatened the Montenegro goal

one minute left to the end , Ahmadi nearly was so close to producing a blunder after he miss-controlled a bad back pass. However, his quick reflex after losing the ball saved his blushes.

in the dying seconds Nekounam tried a long range shot which was comfortably handled by the substitute goalkeeper.  saved .

Shojaei against Montenegro
Shojaei against Montenegro

Team Melli displayed a well defined and organized defensive game, despite the poor opposition, However the offensive line and the goal drought remains a serious concern.  Queiroz has played all his cards in these matches with a couple more to come. He needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat , if he is thinking of winning and that cannot be achieved unless his team scores.
