Why is playing for your National Team NOT a national duty!

It is really hard to think of why many Iranian athletes/sportsmen , who by playing for the national teams, thus serving their country, giving their best to raise the tri colored flag , fight for honors , respect and victory of the motherland and in the process could be exposed to injuries that could life threatening or permanently handicapped, why are these Iranian athletes/sportsmen are not categorized as serving the nations and even worse, prevented from joining their teams that needs them ??

Hamid Sourian – The living legend of Iran’s wrestling

The same person that is wanted in Australia to defend the national honors of Iran in the Asian Cup is considered an outlaw if he does not join the military service and work in a remote village teaching some kids how to run or write. Surely , if the person is talented enough , he must be utilized and serve the country in his filed and specialty rather than wasting him. This is the fundamental of proper Human Resource Management.

The question that begs itself for the Iranian government and lawmakers is, what is the meaning of National Service and why representing the country is NOT considered national service although the media is always ready to hype the players and the fans by pointing to the patriotic duty of football players and other athletes as servant or soldiers of the country when talking part in competitions abroad?!

Iran’s Behdad Salimi (R) and his with compatriot Sajjad Anoushiravani celebrate winning medals at London Olympics games

There is quite a bit of contradiction in the philosophy of the system of National Service. In the World Cup, Mehrdad Pooladi is a hero who is serving his nation, but a few months later, he is a villain and a deserter for trying to do the same in Australia without doing the military service!

Granted, there are laws in Iran governing the military or national service which has to be respected. The question though if these laws are truly reflecting the concept of national service, especially when talking about peace time. These laws need to be amended, serving one’s country cannot only be in the Military field, it could be in the scientific, agricultural, sport and many other fields. The Military should NOT have the exclusive monopoly on people. Law makers need to seriously address this area. National service must re-defined from the archaic system inherited from the days of the pre-revolution era.

As it is , there are many instances where a person can be granted exemption from national service in Iran, why not add sporting duty while representing the country,  to that long list?

Team Melli news brief

Ando Teymourian finally selected his club. From immediate effect, Teymourian will join Tractorsazi Tabriz on a one and a half year contract. Team Melli midfield player has officially left Esteghlal yesterday after dispute on several issues including wages delayed payments.

Reza Haghigh , Persepolis and Team Melli midfield player has left the club to join Paidieh. Haghighi has signed a half season contract with the club from Mashad with an option to extend the contract after the current season’s end.

Carlos Queiroz was highly critical at the non-availability of a training pitch for Team Melli. The Portuguese coach made his displeasure known to visiting the minister of Youth and Sports who was on a courtesy tour of Team Melli camp in Azadi. Apparently, the groundsmen in Azadi started digging the grass for maintenance as soon as it was announced that the match against Palestine is cancelled. This prevented Team Melli from using the pitch. Queiroz was offered an alternative ground within the Azadi complex but he refused citing the bad condition and possibilities of player’s injury so close to the Asian Cup.

In a letter to the commander of the Armed Forces, General Feyrouzabadi, the Minister of youth and Sports , Goudarzi has requested an exception for the release of two Team Melli players who are currently obliged to conduct their compulsory Military service.  Soroush Rafei and Mehrdad Pooladi are the two players concerned who are unable to leave the country. Team Melli has a provision for two more players in the final list submitted to AFC for the AFC Asian Cup 2015 in Australia. It is hoped that Soroush Rafei and Mehrdad Pooladi get the approval of the military and can travel with the squad for the championships.

No Persepolis players for Team Melli

For the first time in Iran’s football history, no player from Persepolis has been selected for Team, Melli squad participating in a major championship or tournament.

Persepolis is arguably the most popular team in Iran and has the biggest fan base in all of Asia. After the success of the revolution in 1979, the club was nationalized and taken over by the government. The idea was to return the club back to private ownership after the cleansing and rectification of the club. 36 years later, and after packs of promises from several Presidents, including the football mad, Mahmoud AhmadiNejad, nothing has changed. During this current government, Persepolis affairs have taken a sharp turn to the worse.

Persepolis-Pray2

Years of mismanagement including financial irregularities have resulted in a huge buildup of debts with hundreds of footballers and athletes not receiving their wages. Suppliers have also faced the same fate and experienced nonpayment of bills for services rendered or goods supplied , although practically speaking , the club is a government entity. Tens and some say, hundreds of legal cases are lying in the courts of law in Tehran and elsewhere in Iran claiming unpaid bills by Persepolis. The current CEO Siyasi is in jail for undisclosed reasons.

Several management changes in the recent years have failed to improve the conditions and the financial health of the popular club. Naturally, off the field conditions deterioration has caught up with the players and coaches of the team resulting in some of the poorest performances in the proud club’s history.  The decline of the team also saw a marked decline in match attendances in Azadi.

Rouyanian & Daei
Rouyanian & Daei

The warning bills about the demise of the club have been ringing for the last few years. The government does not seem to be willing to pay the huge debts left by the unscrupulous past managers and CEO’s and considering shutting down the club for good if no feasible buyers who is politically acceptable to the regime, comes forward to bail out the ailing club.

Persepolis is currently in the 8th position in the League table with 17 matches played. The Club has qualified for the Asian Champions league courtesy of Ali Daei success in giving Persepolis one of its highest ranking in the past few years last season. Daei was sacked early this season and replaced by Hamid Derakhshan. An ex-Persepolis player and coach himself, Derakhshan has failed to leave his mark at the club and he is in serious trouble himself and could end up being sacked soon.

Reading into Queiroz squad

The number of new players in this squad is quite refreshing. In we add them to the already younger or less experienced players Carlos Queiroz seems to have done a fine job in his selection. 5 uncapped players are selected  (Frouzan , Biranvand, Amiri , Rezaeian, & Pouraliganji) in addition to the low experienced Azmoun and Ghafoori as the new faces in the team heading for Australia.

pouraliganji-2
Morteza Pouraliganji

However, despite the excitement about the selection of new players, the old guard will undoubtedly play the key pivotal role in Queiroz game plans once the competition kicks off. Chances of any of the new faces making an impact by given playing time is quite remote and quite uncharacteristic of the conservative Portuguese coach, who prefers subtle and gradual changes.

The biggest problem with this team, like the ones before is the absence of creative midfield player. The selection of Iman Mobali in the squad for the South African camp was a blessing as it signaled a slight shift in Queiroz mentality. Mobali is one of the few masters of creativity in Iran’s football. He is a much mature and composed player now that he reached his thirties. His vision, long balls and reading of the game is second to none. Only Mojtaba Jabbari can claim anything near the quality of Iman Mobali.

mobali_r
Iman Mobali

Unfortunately, Mobali was not selected in the final squad, although there are still two more places to be filled. Undoubtedly, one will be reserved for Montazeri who is on the injury list at this time hoping that he might recover in time. So, the short lived excitement of Queiroz possible tactical switch in Australia and inclinations for offensive game plan seemed to be premature presumption. Queiroz, seems to stick to his tried and trusted defensive game, the one that bore the world to death against Nigeria and Argentina in Brazil.

The finest way to look at the selection of the new players is to look forward to building a better team to compete in FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers. Any other ideas or notions about them being part of the Asian Cup adventure seems to be more like a fairytale.

The major issue in this squad is the form of those players that Queiroz has put his full trust in. The small set of players Queiroz calls on through thick and thin , those he entrusts deliver, the likes of Dejagah , Ghoochannejad , Nekounam , Teymourian,   Sadeghi , Hosseini, Shojaei , Heydari and Beigzadeh. With the best intent and benefit of the doubt given to this group, none has performed anything more than average with their clubs. The standard of Dejagah , Teymourian , Ghoochjanejad and Nekounam has been on the decline in this season. Chances of them turning their dismal lackluster performances at their clubs abroad into a championship winning performance in Australia , is yet another of those wishful thinking that the fans put so much hope upon in Team Melli.

Not all Team Melli players have disappointed though. Arguably the best two who performed above average, and at times excellently are HajSafy and teammate Khalatbary. The first is already in the squad, the latter is in the black list of Queiroz hence he is out of the team. The Portuguese coach will no doubt contest the existing of a blacklist in his pocket but the reality is that Queiroz spends too much energy on off the field side issues,  firefighting ,  counting the numbers of his enemies and who said what rather than focusing on the game itself, the league and the standard of players.  If his off field energy was properly channeled , he would have done a better job that selecting a feeble Karim Ansarifard , who has failed to score or impress with a second division Spanish club, while ignore a youthful inspiring and hungry striker such as Sajjad Shabajzadeh or Mehdi Sharifi.

hajsafy surrounded
Ehsan Hajsafy surrounded by Uzbek players

A few days back, Queiroz admitted that Iran is not even the favorite to qualify from the group, let alone win the title, Qatar and UAE are the two favorites from Group C. That might upset a few million fans, but Queiroz for what it’s worth, is a realistic man in this statement. You cannot claim that you are the best team and vying for the title with such a shambolic pre-tournament preparation. Chaotic, disorganized and under-funded, as team Melli was in the last few months cannot claim anything but to perform the best they can , nothing more and nothing less.

There is a wide gap between the expectations and aspirations of Team Melli fans and those at the helm of the team. While the absolute majority of fans polled in here at TeamMelli.com and in the Navad TV show think of winning the title or reaching the final, the realists would be happy with making it out of the starting black and into the knock out stages.

The misfortunes of Team Melli forwards.

With around 3 weeks to go for Iran’s first match in the AFC Asian Cup 2015, Team Melli’s bad fortunes continues unabated,

Reza Ghoochannejad , the forward who singlehandedly took Iran to the World Cup 2014 with his precious vital goals in the qualifiers , has just been shown the door by a uninspiring team, low level team playing in less than modest league. Ghoochannejad has been told by Al Kuwait FC that his services are no longer required and has to return to his club , Charlton Athletics.  Gucci in fact scored 7 goals for AL Kuwait during the half season , but it was deemed not a good return on investment that the Kuwaiti club which has paid over a million Euro for his services.

Ghoochannejad vs Qatar

Reza Ghoochannejad scored the only goal for Team Melli in the World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina in a 3-1 defeat.

Karim Ansarifard, the young player who promised so much in the last few years , has fared much worse than Gucci . The reserve Team Melli forward has not managed to score any goals for his club Osasuna during his 8 matches and 351 minutes of playing time.

Ansarifard has been told by the Pamplona club that he needs to find another club in the January transfer windows as he will be no longer wanted in Osasuna where his Captain Javad Nekounam is a key player in the Segunda Division side.

KArim Ansarifard

Team Melli is not renowned for their offensive prowess in Asia , as the tactical policy of the team is built around solid defense, however with their two main forwards  being out of a job , it does not augur well for the team in Australia.

montazeri Thumb2

Just as expected after Umm Salal last league game, Pejman Montazeri’s injury looks like a serious one. It has been announced today that Team Melli’s central defender will not be available for selection for the Asian Cup due to the injury.

Another player who might miss the trip to Australia is Khosro Haidary whose recovery has been slow from his injury. The Esteghlal right back is currently under special observation.

“Khakpour is as good as Kranjcar” Kaffashian claims

The head of Iran’s football federation, Ali Kaffashian, much more known for his bizarre and outlandish quotes than his knowledge of football administration, admitted that Habib Kashani knows much better than him in football affairs and Kashani was right when he strongly expressed his concerns about the Omid Team prospects by submitting his resignation. “I have to say that Kashani is quite knowledgeable man in football, much more than I am. We have not accepted his resignation because we needed him although he had valid points about coaching selection” However, controversially Kaffashian said that the appointed Omid Team coach , Mohammad Khakpour , who has virtually no experience at top level football,  is as good as the veteran and championship winner Zlatko Kranjcar , who was Habib Kashani’s handpicked choice!

Kaffashian did not offer any rational explanation for his bizarre claim, nor could we explain the conflict between his two statements!

Omid-Team-Nov2015

On the Omid Team, Kaffashian also admitted that the results and the performance of the Omid Team were poor and inexcusable. “Without having a proper program, we simply brought in a foreign coach, appointed him and told him to win us the Asian Games gold medal. The result was what you have all seen.” Thus for the umpteen times, Kaffashian unwittingly admits his administration poor management, planning and organizational skills.

Asked about the chances of Iran winning the Asian Cup and lifting the trophy for the first time since 1976, the head of FFIRI in his usual sarcastic tone said “ Our team is very good as you have all seen in the World Cup. What I promise you in Australia is that the players will pass the ball instead of sending the ball high in the sky!!”

In a way, Kaffashian officially joins Queiroz as the two people in Iran that have given Team Melli no hope of winning the Asian Cup. Although the promise of not playing “Ali Asghari“ football might appeal to some fans!

Ali Karimi distributing jersies

Kaffashian dismissed any notions of resignation from his post if Team Melli fails in the AFC Asian Cup.

“There is no reason for me to resign because of that. I will continue doing my job and prepare for the next stage. I have a 4 years cycle of presidency and plan to serve it. If the general assembly accepts me and finds me suitable, I will carry on for the next 4 years as well.”

The concept of accepting responsibility and resigning due to shortcomings and failures, has not reached Iranian football shores yet. Failures and defeats are quite acceptable to this federation. 2014 was the one of the worst years of failures at all levels for the proud and glorious Iranian football history, all under the administration of the all-smiling and not too serious Ali Kaffashian.

“Only Nostradamus can predict Team Melli’s results” Haj Rezaei

Amir Haj Rezaei , the prominent Iranian football analyst and former coach , was highly critical of the long interruption of the football league program lasting 50 days in order to set camp for Team Melli.

“You cannot build one team on the ruins of the rest. Football league program is the foundation and fundamental in any country’s football progress. You cannot stop this program for the sake of one team.” Haj Rezaei said in an interview with ISNA.

“I am totally against such scheduling which it is the result of poor planning and loss of awareness. No country I know of has such long interruptions of the league program while it is at its peak.”

Persepolis-&-Esteghlal-in-Azadi

Asked about the prospect of the 4 Iranian clubs in the forthcoming Asian Champions League, Haj Rezaei said that the prospects are quite dim. “The Iranian teams are facing well organized, strong, resourceful and experienced Arab teams from the Persian Gulf states. Their job will be quite difficult at best. I cannot see much chance of progress for these Iranian teams, most of which are facing all sort of problems or financial difficulties.”

“Naft Tehran which has been doing well in the last two seasons has the best chance to progress. They have a well-built and strong team. They have managed to keep the right balance under capable coaches. The only problem with Naft is lack of experience. The same can be said for Tractorsazi. Foolad Khuzestan has lost some key players because of the military service issues however with a clever coach, the team still managed to do well in the league and keep their high ranking. Whether Foolad will be good enough for the Asian Champions league is another question.”

“Out of all the 4 teams, Persepolis has the most daunting task. The club has no CEO , no one to sign their checks , players want to leave , the team is struggling at mid table with some bad results ,  and  to cap it all ,  internal conflicts are aplenty in this organization.  I can’t see how Persepolis can get through this mayhem.”

Asked about Team Melli prospects in the AFC Asian Cup. Haj Rezaei summarized by saying “Only Nostradamus can predict Team Melli’s results.”

Aghajanian “We were under severe financial constraints”

Markar Aghajanian Team Melli Assistant coach stated “We liked to play big games against powerful opponents , but financial severe constraints did not allow us to have such necessary preparation , however we should not have missed any opportunities to play the Africans opponents.”  The opponents that Aghajanian was referring to were the reserve teams of 3 first division South African clubs.

According to ISNA, after the arrival of the Team Melli  from Johannesburg, Markar Aghajanian talked to the reporters and said “Although we had a lot of problems, I believe we had a successful training camp with new players in the squad and the positive games we played as well as the logistics. These camps help to prepare the national team, similar to the camp ahead of the World Cup that we held in South Africa, which was worthwhile.”

In response to the question about the matches “ our competitors in the Asian Cup all prepared themselves by playing against high caliber opponents and quality teams, do you think the preparatory matches against inferior and modest opponent in South Africa, you are actually helping to prepare Team Melli for Asian Cup?”  Aghajanian said “Our team’s total preparation was lower than our competitors and everyone knows it. We also liked to play big games against powerful opponents, but because of severe financial constraints and problems arranging games , we could not have done anything much better (…). Unfortunately, we lost a lot of FIFA days during the last few months, but we also could not afford to lose the chance to play the South African teams”

He was asked  “How many of the new players that you have taken will be in the squad to Australia ?”

Aghajanian’s response was “We have analyzed each single player and filmed all the training session. The final decision has not been taken yet. In today’s and tomorrow’s technical staff meeting we will doing our studies and choose the best players in the squad list to the final before the final conclusion is reached.”

According to Aghajanian and sources in the FFIRI , the final squad list for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup will be announced on Thursday 25th December. Carlos Queiroz , who has not returned to Iran and will be taking the Christmas off abroad, is supposed to be back in Tehran on Sunday for the Palestine game. However, since the game is canceled, it is quite likely that the Portuguese coach will extend his holiday to the new year before arriving in Tehran and then taking off to Australia with the squad for the final stage of the preparation.

Andranik Teymourian leaves Esteghlal.

Team Melli Midfielder , Andranik ‘Ando’ Teymourian has finally been granted approval to leave the club by the chairman of Esteghlal.

After months of dispute between the player and the club, resulting from several issues such as the club holding the player’s wages, delay in payments, contract renewal differences, among other issues, both sides agreed to end their long standing association.

Teymourian was unsettled in Esteghlal and that has obviously affected his form in the league , which at best , was quite  modest compared to the usual Teymourian form.

The midfielder has not announced his next club although Zob Ahan has showed very strong willingness to attract the 31 years old midfielder.

Commenting on Teymourian departure from Esteghlal , head coach Amir Ghalenoei said that he was aware of the dispute between the club and the player   resulting from non-payment of wages. “However, even if a plyer is not paid, he must remain professional enough to conduct his job at 100% for the club and leave these financial issued aside!!!” Ghalenoei , then proceeded and watered down his claim by adding “Of course , the club has an obligation to pay the players.”

One wonders how would Ghalenoei perform and work if his own salary is not paid for three months!
