Javad Nekounam plays for the Tehran Club Pas. He has been consistently one of the best players for the club in the last few years. His youthful energy and dual role as a solid defender and skilful attacking force , has attracted attention as he made his debut in 2000 for the national team.
Nekounam had a pivotal role in Pas Club to winning the IPL championship in 2003. He was also one of the best players in the Asian Cup 2004 where Iran lost to China in penalty kicks before winning the third rank match by beating Bahrain 4-2.
Transferred to Al Wehda club of Abu Dhabi in the beginning of 2005/06 season where he had a good start , but a few matches in the league and a change of coach resulted in Nekounam being on the surplus list , where he was subsequently recruited buy Al Sharjah club.
After appearing for Team Melli in Germany , Nekounam attracted many clubs but eventually signed by the Spanish Club Osasuna who have one two-legged tie standing between them and a first entry into the UEFA Champions League . They finished fourth in the Primera División last season.
At the start of 2007/08 season Nekounam suffered a serious injury which kept him of football for the rest of the season, fully recovering just a few week before the end of the Primera División. However , he bounced back with the remaining 3 matches of Team Melli in FIFA World Cup 2010 qualifiers and was instrumental in helping the team to qualify to the final qualifying rounds and adding his scoring tally with a magnificent long range shoot against Kuwait in Azadi stadium.
Nekounam eventually returned back to Iran to join Esteghlal before the start of 2012/13 season.
