Adelkhani began playing football in 1960's playing at Shahin. After leaving for Germany, Adelkhani played for SG Wattenscheid 09 for two seasons 1969-1971, Wuppertaler SV, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and VfL Klafeld-Geisweid before moving back to Iran. He spent 8 years in Germany where he played football for several clubs.
Adelkhani's first senior club in Iran was Taj SC with whom he won second place in the league in 1974. He then joined Shahbaz, where he won third place in 1976/77.
Between 1973 and 1978, he played 17 times for Team Melli, scoring 2 goals. Adelkhani was a left-footed player with amazing dribbling abilities. His style of play was a mixture of individual skills and a disciplined European system of football.
Iranian football fans will never forget the Asian Games final 1974 in Aryamehr Stadium between Iran and Israel, in which Adelkhani forced Shum's own goal, which led Iran to win this tournament.
He was part of the Iran squad that qualified for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. However, an injury he sustained while saving his young daughter from falling down the stairs kept him out of the competition.
