3RD ASIAN
CHAMPIONSHIP
Israel 1964
The third Championship in 1964 attracted the participation of 16 teams
of which 12 teams took part in the Final Championship in Tel Aviv,
Israel. The tournament was perhaps the poorest of the first three.
Though played to big crowds in Haifa, Jerusalem , Jaffa and Ramat
Gan, the standard of football was no where near as the previous
tournaments. Sir Stanley Rous attending the tournament on FIFA's behalf
, also commented on the relatively poor level of sportsmanship displayed
by the participating teams. Israel, on purely practical terms, was not a
wise choice of venue, coming hard on the heels of the Asian Games in
Jakarta.
It was again the home team who dominated;
however, the holders, South Korea did not send their strongest team, who
were kept at home preparing for the Olympic Games qualifying match
against South Vietnam which was being played at the same time in Seoul
!!
The decisive game was
played between Israel and India early on, but if the Koreans had beaten
Israel by three clear goal margin before a capacity 40,000 crowd in
Ramat Gan, they would have won the title for the third time running.
Instead Israel won 2-1 to take the title with India second and the Korean Republic
settled for third. ranked fourth.
