2ND ASIAN
CHAMPIONSHIP
Korea 1960
In 1960 the second Asian Cup Championship was played on a zonal system
in the first round hosted by India (western zone), Singapore (central)
and the Philippines (eastern), respectively. Total of 11 teams
participated in this tournament from the original 6 in the first one. In
the western zone Israel emerged as a finalist after a close encounter
with Iran (a first time participant). Both teams finished level on
points and with just one goal difference, Israel made it to the
finals. The Final Championship was
played in Seoul's Hyochang Park Stadium where hosts Korea Republic
played the crucial game against Israel. In an example of how popular the
game was becoming , the match witnessed some chaotic scenes. The ground
was overlooked by a hill, which in effect doubled the capacity to
40,000, and still boisterous fans broke down the gates and overran the
police to gain access to the stadium. The Korean Prime Minister , who
was the guest of honor at the game was forced to leave the stadium
during the first half, because he complained that he could not watch the
game!
Israel, considered
the strongest team in Asia, could not resist the Korean enthusiasm and
lost the match by three clear goals.
South Korea emerged Champions with Israel
runners-up and the Republic of China and Vietnam taking third and fourth
positions.
